First things first: In any developed country (and most which are not) nobody wants you "dead." That often defeats the purpose of searching for you.Some things:Assuming that you haven't escaped from prison or jail, it is going to take the police hours to several days to seriously begin looking for you. If you are in the United States,unless you are in a rural area, there aren't going to be the roadblocks and checkpoints that you see on television or in films as that would delay traffic and cause a great deal of complaints. You have at 1-3 days to get things together, provided that you stay clear of places where you are known or will be sought.If there is a such a person, then go to a friend who you haven't seen recently and who is unaware of your current issues and ask them if you can stay the night. Tell them a story that will convince them that you need to do this. The best people for this are occasional sex partners and people with whom you were close, but that you haven’t seen for some time. They are among the first places that the authorities will look for a fugitive and police cars routinely cruise motel parking lots and run out of state or area license plates, If you need to stay in a motel/hotel outside of that radius, pick the nicest one possible and pay in cash. Buy a pre-paid credit card for the ones which require a credit card for incidentals.Contact a private limousine service and have them pick you up. Have them transport you to a high end destination within 2-3 hours and stay there for a few days until you have regained your bearings and you have had a chance to implement whatever type of escape plan or out that you may have considered. The place where you do your escape planning MUST be high-end as the authorities are loath to get warrants for finer establishments without solid proof that you are indeed wanted and lower end options are prime places for the police to search for local fugitives.There are numerous “outs” which can be undertaken and I have detailed a few in other answers on Quora. Your out must consider that after the police put your information on the NCIC (a national criminal database) any officer who stops you and runs your identification (assuming that you are still using your own ID) will arrest you. If you are able to rent a small apartment there without undergoing a credit check (some people still allow people to do so if they like them when they meet them) you can remain hidden for weeks, months or even years if you keep your nose clean, pay your rent on time and avoid the police.As for the “rest of your life”: If you can evade capture for 1-2 years, then the odds are good that you won’t be easily found by the authorities. While they may keep looking for you (especially if you are a murderer, a sexual predator or significant drug offender) most of the time (in the US , at least) the local police will either wait for you to screw up or they will ask the US Marshal’s Fugitive Task Force for assistance. If neither of those options pan out, you may be free for many years or even decades. Unless you have an exceptional amount of hidden wealth, you are going to have to go to work. That will almost certainly mean a low wage job and it will mean more chances of being exposed. Frankly, after a few months or years of that you may need to make the decision on whether or not you want to remain a fugitive or return to face justice. If you believe that you will only receive a light sentence, then surrendering yourself and serving out your sentence might be for the best. If you are facing a sentence which is life or its equivalent, you might wish to remain on the run and hope that they never catch up to you.

If one was seeking to get murdered, then they might. However most people are trying to avoid such things.Not carrying ID doesn’t fly here in the US - Even though Jack Reacher is White, he is also a big “tough looking” guy who dresses shabbily. That means he would get ID-checked at about the same as a minority male would be. While not having an ID is not itself a crime, arguing that point to a police officer when you have committed as many felonies as the character has in his novels would mean that you’d eventually get arrested as being a suspect in SOMETHING.Cheap motels in the US suck - As someone who travels for work, I can state affirmatively that staying low-end motels in an experience so unpleasant that it’s avoided by anyone who is familiar with them. Besides most being poorly maintained, they are homes of both desperate, as well as dangerous, individuals. Reacher’s “aggression” would make him a target at such places as people with little hope often have little tolerance for other people’s attitudes. These places are also a favorite cruising spot for local law enforcement as they are always good for at least one felony arrest per week.Cheap motels in the US suck # 2 - NO motel is going to rent someone who doesn’t have ID. Period. There are too many problems related to this for even the sleaziest fleabag to do so. Reacher would need an ID and, in some cases, even a credit card to rent some rooms.It would be too expensive to constantly purchase new clothes - Apparently the author has never purchased clothing in the US as A) Hardware stores don’t usually sell cheap clothing and B) Cheap clothing wears out more quickly than durable expensive clothing. Reacher would spend more money buying new clothes than he would simply buying several pairs of sturdy clothing and rotating his selection.Jack Reacher seems to exist in a universe were injuries and accidents rarely occur - People who hitchhike risk getting hit by cars. People who stay in cheap motels tend to get parasitical infections that come from staying in such places. Rarely showering brings its own skin-related problems. And constantly getting into fights will eventually result in a beating, a stabbing or a shooting. Reacher’s lack of ID and indigent appearance would result in him getting treated at the local “county” hospital where bad care is often the best they’ve got.The bus system in the US sucks these days - Apparently the author is more familiar with 1950s or 1960s America as in his first novel, Reacher gets off of a bus in a small Georgia town. Since Trailways merged with its larger competitor Greyhound in 1987, bus service has rapidly declined. It would be easier to hitchhike (see also #1 for that) to a small town than it would be to catch a bus there in 21st century.Reacher gets arrested a few too many times - His DNA would be on file and eventually it would get linked to outstanding crimes that he HAS committed (as opposed the numerous times he’s wrongfully detained) and his “wandering days” would be over. The idea is when you are a drifter, you like to drift around. That isn’t possible if you are incarcerated.Small town people are only somewhat welcoming to “outsiders” - Apparently the author has not been in many rural areas of the US as a drifter, without a car or a job, isn’t highly prized “guest” in too many small towns. If you play “Reacher” and roll into such a town in real life, you might find yourself rolling right the hell back on out when the locals decide they don’t want you around. People live in small towns because they like safe and predictable, because they are caring for elderly or sick relatives, or because they are “trapped.” None of those types of people want a giant stranger meddling in their “business.”So no, questioner, it isn’t possible to live like Jack Reacher unless you enjoy harassment, arrests, and injuries.

Maybe. I was on vacation and taped my credit limit from shopping. The funds were in a brokerage account down the street. Which is not helpful when the hotel attempts to authorize and thinks you are not solvent. Wire Transfers and such do not occur outside mornings EST so of course on Saturday night you are cursing at an ATM only to find out that they will only accept a card and not cash! I honestly hate credit cards and use debit 90% of the time. However I hate random authorizations to hold funds. So I handed the hotel like $500 cash down payment ($250/night room and meals etc) and said they could run my card if it went over. Which it did not. I had $1000 for a special weekend at the hotel. So I figured that I’d hand it to them, delegate a cut to the tips. I had a blast with “making it rain” in their world. Got room service at 2am, quiet corner suite so I could write and think at a little office. Beautiful spa bathroom. Staff and I would giggle that I’m such a Diva that I need avacado toast at 2am. LOL…kidding!So that quick answer you may want is: yes make it rain. If you don’t have $1000 for a weekend debauchery and have $100 for a motel 6 you are also better off not charging a credit card you cannot afford.
