PDF Editor FAQ

What has shocked you the most about a patient's past medical history?

I am a dental surgeon. On initial exam, we routinely check blood pressure. This guy was 230/130. No, that can’t be right. Check the equipment and do it again. Yep…230/130. Yep still 230/130. “Mr Smith, teeth are important, but your BP is more important. If that were my BP, I would go directly to the ER. How about I see you again after that is resolved?”

What has a doctor/nurse said to you that they should not have said?

My mom was undergoing abdominal surgery for a mass. She was 78 years old and had had 9 vaginal births. No other medical history in those 78 years. When the surgery was completed the gyn onc came out to me and my 4 sisters (ages 39–59) and said my mom had Ovarian cancer stage 3c and we should all (5 daughters) have elective double mastectomies along with total hysterectomies. This was a shock beyond belief as my moms gyn thought the mass was most likely not going to be cancer. So he not only dealt her prognosis but ours within 2 minutes of meeting us.I was so upset and mad that he didn’t consider my moms age when diagnosed and the fact that her 9 children (ages 39 - 59) hadn’t experienced cancer. Why would he strongly suggest such a radical thing without even knowing if we carried a genetic marker - which was highly unlikely given our unremarkable medical histories and our age).

As a Paramedic, what's the most blatant misuse of calling for an ambulance that you've seen?

We were called at about 3am to a familiar house in the Raploch for a chest pain. Now we suspected this was shite because I knew this characters medical history better than my own. When we got there we found the patient had called because she needed a light for her cigarette. Unfortunately, and purely by accident, my colleague put the defibrillator down on her tobacco tin and upset the lot. We were asked to leave (quite strongly) and we accepted this as a refusal of treatment.
