In 1992 when I was 12 my dead beat father was paying my mother little to no child support. She had gotten to a point where she was so desperate that she was not eating and give what little food she had to us children. My father had separated from my mother and I see no need for him to buy her a present but what he did next was just evil. On her birthday he gave my mother 2x $100 gift cards for Coles which is a large chain in Australia of supermarkets. Back in 1992 the gift cards could only be used at Coles stores for food products (not alcohol). My mother did not drink or do drugs and had my father had given her $200 cash she would have used this to buy food as the house was bare of food, we were relying on some pet chickens to lay us some eggs.My mother did not care that my father had payed her in gift cards, $200 would completely restock all our basic staples and get at least a month worth of food (in 1992). The store was 60km away and the money my mother had been saving for food she spent on fuel to get there. She spent the money at the service station in the little town we lived in and drove 60km to the Coles store. She did a huge shop taking the calculator to make sure she did not exceed $200 since she didn't have any cash at all after buying fuel. She even got us kids some Froot Loops as a special treat. She went to the counter and put the groceries through it, was $199.50, I had never seen such a large amount as a 12 year old. She handed the cashier the first $100 card, she scanned it and it said “not registered.” She scanned the second and it also said “not registered”. What that means is my father stole the cards off the shelf. How it works is Coles had the cards on display, if you wish to buy one you simply take the card to the cashier, pay the $100 and then $100 is credited to that card for use at Coles. My mother had this explained to her, then was accused of stealing the cards herself. Coles told my mother to leave and said they were going to call the police. My mother's cashier had a queue forming behind her and the manager came and spoke to my mother. Meanwhile both checkouts either side of hers had been opened and every customer was staring at my mother being accused of theft. They were also looking at my mother like she was stupid because most people know the gift cards are worth nothing unless you pay for them. My mother left the store with great embarrassment and drove home. My mother rang my father but could not speak long as the phone calls were expensive back then. Of course he swore blind that he had paid for them.Two days later my mother actually fainted from starvation. We children gave her all the money in our piggy banks and picked some apples from the farmer next door's trees to give to our mother. This was the first time I ever stole anything, ever. I believe the total from our piggy banks was about $14, but it carried her though to the next welfare check.To make matters worse, my father was only paying my mother $20 every 2 weeks (for 3 kids) and he refused to pay her for 20 weeks since he had given her $200 already.“Disappointing” is an understatement for this birthday present. They looked very similar but had “$100” written on them.
