One of the things he had to do was select a Catholic Saint who would be his guide through his spiritual life and also write a letter to the Bishop. In the letter, he had to explain his saint choice. I had the privilege of reading our son’s letter because I had to email it to the church. Our son chose Saint Padre Pio because Padre Pio had many physical ailments that caused him severe pain for much of his life, but he always loved God and never lost his faith. Our son said Padre Pio had determination, and he also wanted to have the determination necessary to love God no matter what suffering he may have to endure during his life. When I read that letter, it was clear to me that our son was looking for a saint who reminded him of his father. When our son looks at his father, he see a man who is determined to live life and love God no matter what suffering he has to endure. My husband certainly never complains about his situation. He just keeps on living.When your daughter sees your father-in-law give himself a shot, she may see a man who is enduring suffering in a positive way. He may be one of the best role models she has in life. You may be surprised to find out someday that the simple action of watching him take a shot helped her in some unrelated event later in life. Sometimes it’s not about protecting our kids. Sometimes it’s about exposing our kids. Life is hard! Please don’t deprive your daughter of experiences that may give her the emotional stamina she needs someday to succeed in life.
