This girl has.. not only she cleared the examination she was the topper of batch 2014.Obviously or not obviously you might have figured it out she is none other than Ira Singhal.She is a victim of Scoliosis, which is a medical condition entailing a deviation of the spine. Owing to this, she has difficulty moving her arm.Additionally, this condition debars her from being eligible to be an Indian Revenue Services Officer, a clerk or even a sweeper.At 31, this was not her first, but her fourth attempt at the highly competitive UPSC examinationsAlthough she cleared the examinations in 2010 also, she was denied a position on the grounds of physical disability.However, she was not one to back down and she fought her case at the Central Administrative Tribunal, won it and was admitted in 2014.When The Indian Express managed to bring out the badass in her, while talking about her denial of post after clearing the UPSC in 2010 (you have been warned) –“It was a big disappointment, a major setback then. But I decided to fight back. It was tough initially as I had to undergo tests, submit medical certificates and prove that I am capable of doing jobs entrusted to me in the IRS. For two years, it was tough but then everyone realised that I am capable of working in spite of the disabilities. They realised I am no pushover-- IRA SINGHAL..!!

This happened to me in 2004 when I was expecting my first child. My boss was an old maid and had made comments like “They are obviously very free to have all these babies!” when my young colleagues (ie. also her reportees) started having families. Into my 7th month, I had requested a handover of my duties to my covering officer and this was expediently done with my manager fully involved in the process. This was precautionary and in accordance to my doctor’s advise. By that time, I had accumulated 31 days leave which I was entitled to. 2 weeks to my due date, the doctor gave bedrest to be covered by medical certificate. This was submitted along with an email to inform of the likelihood that baby was due any minute and so maternity leave would soon kick in. Unfortunately, the nurse made a mistake and gave a chit covering only 1 week. When I did not turn up on the 1st day of that last week, my covering officer called up just to inform me about the dates on the medical certificate. To simplify matters, I indicated that this last week to be covered by my leave days of which I had ample. One would think that it would be that simple right? Wrong! My covering officer called me up a few minutes later saying “ Miss 3@¿@ will not be approving your leave application due to exigencies of service!” Needless to say I was livid. In light of her prejudice towards married and pregnant women, plus the fact that a handover was completed plus the fact I had 31 days of accumulated leave plus the fact that one cannot control it when a baby was going to come out, it all did not go down well with me. At. All. It ended up with me in a fit, speaking in tongues (lol!) calling up the CEO’s office to complain to her boss, the CEO. Yes. My boss was holding a director position and so, it was dissappointing indeed. She must have been given an earful as a result of my escalation. My covering officer called me up within half hour to say “Miss 3@¿@ said there was no need for you to have called up CEO on the matter.” to which I said to him “Tell her go f*#@ herself!” . Thanks to all that stress, I then got contractions and baby came that night!
