PDF Editor FAQ

I'm a girl and I'm average at Maths and Physics. Am I capable of studying aerospace or aeronautical engineering?

Hi, I am currently an Aerospace engineering student at the University of Queensland, Australia. Before I answer your question, I would like to share with you my story. The story is about "How a teenager with strong passion in Aeronautical engineering, however, with below average academic performance was able to get into top Aerospace engineering program at top university at the end".Here is the story. When I was Form 1 and 2 in secondary school, my overall academic results was horrible. Especially my Mathematics results, my average marks and grades in Mathematics was around 50%, which is a grade C from the conventional grading scale in my country(Malaysia). In extreme case, I once failed Mathematics and English subjects. Because of my results and a combination of some other factors, I was being discriminated by my peers. Moreover, I was inferior to Mathematics subject and that inferiority complex makes me reluctant to study and do revision for my Maths test, thus compromise my Maths test results and raise m inferiority towards Maths test even further.Things started to show possibility for positive changes when I had reached the end of my Form 2 life. That is because I heard about class streaming during Form 4 and 5. In class streaming, students are divided into three major streams. The three major streams are Science, Art and Sub-Science streams. Students with bad results in the Form 3 government public test(Formally called PMR) are not allowed to study in Science and Sub-science streams, they WILL be placed in Art stream AUTOMATICALLY regardless whether or not they are interested to enter Art stream. I know that my dream to be an Aeronautical Engineer will not be achievable if I become one of them. Why? because in Art stream, students are not allowed to study Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Additional Mathematics subjects. Without background in these subjects during high school, I won't be able to choose Pre-Engineering Subjects during my Pre-University studies due to the subject requirement restrictions. Again, without a background in Pre-Engineering subjects during Pre-University studies, my chances to get admitted into overseas Aerospace engineering program is very slim, not to mention the competitiveness of other applicants. (I only mention Overseas Universities because Malaysia universities does not offer Aerospace engineering programs). Hence, to prevent that from happening, I know I must start studying hard in order to get excellent results in PMR (Especially Mathematics) and able to get into Science stream. After being consistent in doing revision and studying for a period of time my overall academic results started to improve. On the other hand, my Mathematics grades which was initially in the range of E and C had improved to the range of grade B and C, which is average. At the end, I got a 6 A's and 2 B's out of a total of 8 subjects in my PMR. Guess what? I got an A in Mathematics! As a result, I managed to enter Science stream during Form 4 and 5. Before form 4 started, I know that despite of my good results, I cannot start slacking or else the history will repeat. Therefore, I started to self study in advance especially in subjects like Physics, Mathematics and Additional Mathematics before my form 4 classes started. My efforts were not in vain. Due to hard work, my Physics subject results was consistently in grade A range. Whereas my Mathematics and Additional Mathematics results were consistently in the grade A+ range. In one occasion, I even obtained 98% - A+ for my additional mathematics subject due to my hard work. Again, with my consistency and hard work in studies, I managed to obtained an excellent result in Malaysian Certificate of Education-SPM(Straight 11A's).Due to my good results in SPM, I was able to select pre-engineering subjects during my pre-university studies, Cambridge GCE A-Level. To be specific, I took Mathematics , Further Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. With my hard work again of course, I managed to score 4 A*'s and A's in A-level.On the other hand, back in high school, I realized that I am lack of critical thinking skills despite of my stellar academic performance. Besides that, I also realized that lack of critical thinking skills will not bring me far. Therefore, I started to participate in Mathematics related competitions and Olympiad as the questions in this type of competitions are quite critical thinking orientated. Initially, my performance was average relative to other contestants, however, after multiple attempts and some hard work, I managed to get Distinctions, Silver and Bronze Medals in various Mathematics competitions such as Australian Mathematics Competitions (AMC), Kangaroo Mathematics Competition(KMC) and Euclid Mathematics Competitions. My achievement in these competitions reflected that my critical thinking skills had improved. The consequence of improvement in critical thinking skills include, consistent excellent Maths results even though the difficulty of the course material is increasingly challenging, more intuition and quicker learning speed. Besides that, I also participated in Malaysian Computing Challenge(MCC), a C++ programming competition. Due to my improved critical thinking skills and of course hard work, I managed to won One Silver and Bronze individual award and one team Bronze award in two attempts. Because of my good performance in MCC, I was allowed to be involved in the International Olympiad of Informatics (IOI 2015) Malaysian Team selection process. In that process, I managed to progress to the final stage of selection, in which I was selected to represent Malaysia in Asia Pacific Informatics Olympiad(APIO)-2015.With good results in A-level and SPM and also achievements mentioned in the previous paragraphs, I managed to get accepted by the Department Of Aeronautics-Imperial College London (ICL) to study Aeronautical Engineering. However, I did not go Imperial College London for Aeronautical Engineering because I failed to secure a scholarship to study there. At the end, I end up studying Double Major in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Queensland(Still a top school though). Now, to answer your question and with reference to my story, I would say that being average at Maths and Physics will going to make you suffer in any Engineering programs(Including Aerospace). In worst case, it may even close down your chance to get admitted by Department of Aerospace Engineering from University. However, Capability to do something is not a Mathematical Constant, instead, Capability to do something is like a Mathematical equation and in that equation, there are several variables which adds degree of freedoms for your Capability to vary.In other words, capability is affected by various factors, if you don't make any changes to these factors, your capability will remain constant over time. Applying this analogy to your situation and with reference to my story, I cannot predict your future capability to study Aerospace Engineering. Assuming that you are really passionate in Aerospace Engineering, sure, you can go for it, BUT not with your current capability. You must improve your capability just like me in my story and it is really NECESSARY to do so!Here are my two cents to improve your capability to study Aerospace Engineering.let efforts in your studies = dependent factor of your mathematics and physics ability, let your Mathematics and Physics ability = dependent factor of your capability to cope with Aerospace Engineering program. From these, it is obvious that :effort in your studies = dependent factor of your capability to cope with Aerospace Engineering program.Supposed that ; your capability to cope with Aerospace Engineering program is directly proportional to your effort in your studies. The more effort you put in your studies, the greater your capability to cope with Aerospace Engineering program. This obvious relationship applies to both genders. So, Study hard like me and All the best to you!!!I hope my story will give you motivation.(Forgive my imperfect English)

Non-Americans: What is "High School" to you?

In Malaysia, a "High School" in the US would be called "Secondary School" here. There are two levels, Lower Secondary (Which is Grade 8-10 in the US) and Upper Secondary (Grade 11-12). We don't called them Grade 1,2,3.... though. We call them Form 1 up to Form 5. So that means Secondary School = Middle+High School. When you're a Form 1-3 student you study the same type of subjects every year, (If you ask me it is very bland and boring) and take a major examination in Form 3 which used to be PMR (Penilaian Menengah Rendah) but now changed to PT3 (Pentaksiran Tingkatan 3). The major change in this examination is that there is no circling of answers A, B, and C (or D). You have to write the answers down. I adapt quite well with this change though. (Some of my friends do not though)Once you finished taking PT3 or PMR(Used to be) the results you get may either allow you to join the Science Stream (Which composed of Physics, Biology, Chemistry and Additional Mathematics) or the Arts (Which is Economy, Commerce, General Science and Geography).I also heard that there are other subjects as well you can choose from like Internet Technology, Literature and others. But these above are the main ones and every school in Malaysia has it.You need to get a high score in order to join the Science Stream. If you cannot join it, you will be automatically put in Arts Stream. If you got a high score but want to do Arts, you can but it puts you at a disadvantage here. (You cannot not join courses in College/University that is heavily Science-related like Engineering, Physics and others) You could also drop out from Science stream to Arts if you feel that it is too difficult but doing that in the end of the year puts you at a very major disadvantage as the subjects in Science stream and Art stream are totally different. In my school I was pretty lucky that only a few could or want to join the Science stream. In my school there was only 4 (Including me) students that are in the Science stream, so that means it is almost like a tuition instead of a class. (Since teachers give about 25% attention to each student or more if you're participating). Some of my former classmates said that their school have like 40 Science students in each class.SPM (Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia) is the final and the most important examination for students. Failing this would basically mean that you could not go to any college/university and you could only take menial jobs. (Though I believe that you still be able to do business, which other students may consider) To pass this test you need to pass at the very least Bahasa (Malay Language) and Sejarah (History). I also heard that English is compulsory to pass this year. Also, majority of the subjects are conducted in Bahasa except for the Science subjects. It used to be that Science and Maths are conducted in English, but the Education Department decided to repeal it, so Science and Maths are conducted in Bahasa now. (PPSMI)I'm also taking SPM this year too. I hope I can do well! Also if there is any mistake feel free to comment about it. Any help is appreciated. If you want to ask questions then go ahead too.
