I have done this exactly three times in twelve years of private practice.The first was for my brother in law. He has a history of migraines. He had a bad migraine, it was after hours, and he was out of his medication. I gladly called in a prescription for him.The next was for my aunt. She is a complicated patient with many medical problems, including chronic pain from several spinal conditions. She was traveling to visit me and had a flare up. I called in a dose of her anti inflammatory medicine for her.The most recent was for my uncle. He is a diabetic and had run out of his insulin, so I called some in.I have a few rules when I do this for family members. The first is that I won’t prescribe any controlled substances. This is to keep my name from popping up in any way, shape or form in front of the licensing board. The next is that I won’t start any new medications for them. It has to be an established medication for a known condition. Finally, it is understood that I am only providing a small supply to tide them over until they can get to their own doctor.Proper medical care involves taking a history, doing a physical exam, looking over lab work and radiology studies, and doing these things repeatedly to provide good continuity of care. I’m not doing any of these things for my relatives, so I have to be very conservative with my treatments.

Yes I did. I was studying in Bardhaman medical college,A government medical college in West Bengal. I had taken a drop after 12 and prepared for the entrance and had cleared it.(Here I need to mention that I never had any interest in MBBS but had to pursue it for family). After struggling for 2 long years I finally gave up and took BSc Economics when I was in 3rd year(I always had a liking for Maths and wanted to do MBA). Well family struggles set aside, seeing my pathetic condition in Medical college my parents finally agreed for it and are supporting me now. Though they regret that I have lost 3 years but I know that whatever I am doing will ultimately lead to me leading a happy and satisfied life.
