What happened to make you realize a student was far too intelligent for the class they were in?This doesn’t quite fit the bill but I had a student in my philosophy class once - I can’t remember what he’d been diagnosed with but it was complex. He had a whole network of support in place and his teachers had regular meetings with the support specialists.He was a really nice young man. I liked him a lot. He took a keen interest in class and regularly contributed to discussions. The problem was I never knew how to respond to anything he said, nor did his peers, because it was entirely unintelligible. I mean, the words were all recognisable but the sentences made no sense.When it came to essays, it was just as bad. Pages of what I can only describe as gibberish. But there, amongst all this nonsense, there would suddenly be two or three sentences of real genius. He would say something so incredibly perceptive and profound that I would gasp. And then, back to nonsense.I didn’t know what to make of it nor did I have a clue how to even begin marking it against the assessment criteria. I wondered; if he was capable of such insight then perhaps I was missing something in the rest of his work. So I showed it to a colleague but he agreed with me - nine parts nonsense and one part genius. Of course, I duly reported this to the specialists at our next meeting but they had no suggestions as to what I could do.Examination time arrived. There were three exams in my subject. This lad sat two but, I am told, had some kind of panic attack and missed the third. When the results came out, he had the lowest mark of any student in the first exam. I think the examiner may have taken pity and given him a couple of marks to avoid a big fat zero. But in the second exam, he scored the highest mark by far of any student in his cohort. Go figure.I have always felt that I failed that young man. Somewhere inside him was the next Wittgenstein just begging to be set free. And I didn’t have the know-how to release him.

One of my pet peeves is abuses of language like the assertion that it is logically impossible for the universe to be 14 billion years old.It is here presented without any evidence at all that it is true, and yet suggests that anyone who would hold that the universe is 14 billion years old is somehow illogical.However, at best the OP would be able to demonstrate that the age of the universe was impossible, given the assumptions the OP makes on the nature of reality!You see, logic reaches its conclusions from some set of premises, and the truth of its conclusions is contingent on the truth of its premises. The claim that universe logically cannot be 14 billion years old is bullshit pure and simple, and the suggestion that proponents of that understanding of the universes’s age are illogical is simply preposterous.It displays an incredible hubris on the part of the OP as to his understanding of reality.When speaking on logic, at least show some understanding of it!Inconsistent with your beliefs is not the same as illogical.Now, as to why many people hold to the view that the universe is on the order of 14 billion years old, they do so, because they are presented credible evidence that that part of the universe we can see, is indeed roughly of that age. This evidence consists of knowledge accumulated quite some time as to how our universe seems to evolve. That age estimate is a consequence of our best model of how the universe evolves over time, the general theory of relativity, as well as of our best ‘theory of matter’, particle physics.Modern physics not only predicts the results of future experiments, but also retrodicts verifiable facts about our universe. Given the high confidence that this testing of theory has inspired, it is exceedingly reasonable to allow for the fact that our universe might indeed be that old, and in fact the stronger position that this is more likely than not is warranted. Personally, I’d assess the evidence as even suggesting much more likely than not.These theories themselves are internally consistent ensuring their logical validity, which means that the only way they can be falsified is by empirical observation that falsifies a prediction, not by any form of logic.These theories are the very epitome of logical. And beyond that backed up by empirical evidence which suggest that they are not only logically valid but also reasonably sound in the sense of consistent with observation.In conclusion, believing that the universe is 14 billion years old is most certainly not in any way illogical and in fact very well justified by empirical evidence.This is in contrast to to the entirely unsubstantiated, and in fact false claim, that the universe logically cannot be 14 billion years old.
