I live in Wisconsin.My immune-compromised family and friends are virtual prisoners in their homes because the risk of infection has gotten so great around here that they can’t take the risk to leave. Something like one in five state citizens tested come back positive.The economy is in shambles, as jobs either become life-threatening or just disappear for lack of customers and clientele. Our state legislature refuses to do anything but back lawsuits to stop mask orders and capacity limits.Our president makes a big show of how he doesn’t need a mask. He lets everyone know that a life-threatening illness isn’t a big deal, despite being infected himself and having access to experimental treatments that virtually no one else in the country has.There are more people infected in the white house staff alone than there are in Vietnam and New Zealand combined.I haven’t been allowed back into my office since march. I’m lucky I can telecommute. I’ve been able to see my parents exactly twice, from a distance, in a park. For both of them a positive diagnosis is essentially a death sentence.So yeah, Don, tell me again how the pandemic is over.

Let’s start with what is factually known. The United States Post Office has been in trouble for decades. Over the past two decades the post office has failed to modernize on a timely basis, has severe pension problems and is not competitive with any of the major package handling companies. This is not new news.Hiking prices alone will not fix any of that and there are several good reasons to get rid of the post office, so, let’s be honest about that right up front.So, why block aid now? There are two reasons why this is coming to a head at this point in time. The first is that Trump has problems with pensions and unions to begin with. A few weeks ago he greenlighted Defense Secretary Mark Esper’s efforts to end collective bargaining with civilian workers (750k workers). This resulted in the immediate resignation of Veronica Daigle his principle staff advisor for personnel and readiness. Like the Department of Defense the USPS has a large union base (approximately 200k members).Trump seems to like getting rid of union workers, surprising considering his base has a significant number of union members.The second reason is highlighted in a comment he recently made. He stated that if we allow mail-in voting no Republican could get elected. This was an interesting comment and one which they tried to exploit in Wisconsin during the most recent election. In a clearly partisan move Republicans in Wisconsin, stopped mail in voting forcing Democrats to vote with many polling places closed because of the pandemic. The Republican belief that this is the best way to stopping voting from people who have compromised immune systems and other health and disability issues.It didn’t work in Wisconsin as voters still struggled to get to the polls where Trump’s favorites were defeated in landslides, a potential harbinger of the future. This move to get rid of the post office will build on these efforts.So, while the Post Office plainly has problems, right now during a pandemic pulling funding would be almost as silly as pulling WHO funding during a global pandemic.Oh, wait….
