Many reasons, including that it’s distracting to the jury, witnesses, judge, lawyers and other people in the courtroom, photos can be tampered with easily or released to the public when they’re not supposed to be (especially in cases involving minor children) and it can be a safety risk. You know those slimy ambulance-chasing lawyers you always hear about who defend just about anybody? Well, more often than not they’re just doing their job. Everybody has the right to a fair trial and legal representation. But an angry public sees those lawyers as monsters and by releasing images of them, it can put them in danger. And the defendant and plaintiff? They’re in even MORE danger because unlike a lawyer or other courtroom personnel, they’re the ones who are actually living in their own case. Suppose for instance that a man is beating his wife. She runs to a battered women’s shelter to hide out and sues him in the meantime. He gets her photo in court. Now he can use it to track her down by giving it out to other people and asking, “have you seen this woman?”Of course, some trials do allow photography and even videos, but these are only in special circumstances and are often recorded by the government or the court for historical purposes or training purposes. As for courtroom TV shows, these are more of an arbitration thing for small claims, so while it is technically a real case being televised, certain boundaries are in place, it’s not really a full-on “trial” by conventional standards and you’re never going to see good ol’ Judy dealing with a murder or a rape or a terrorist attack on a TV show. Serious cases are VERY strict about who goes to see them, who can enter the courtroom and in most cases don’t allow filming or photos of any sort, and news reporters are barred from entering with cameras and are not allowed to be distracting to anyone during a trial in session. Sometimes law students, paralegal students and other civilians besides the jury are allowed in. They are made to have cell phones turned off or set to vibrate, they aren’t allowed to text generally in any trials I’ve been to, no digital cameras or analog film cameras are welcome, no video-recording equipment is welcome and there are penalties if you violate these orders beyond just getting kicked out. You could be arrested or charged for violating the rules of a courtroom.

A couple of weeks ago, I found a newspaper from 1937 underneath the torn out old kitchen cabinets.
