The most effective thing that can be done at home is to begin at birth talking to your child with proper speech and proper language. From birth hold the child in your lap and read to them. Read to them materials to children’s books to selections from the newspaper to selections of good literature. This helps set reading as an expected behavior and implants desire and skills for the child to learn to read later. Give them a varied environment. Encourage general motor skills (especially encouraging the development of skills on both sides of the body.) With a foundation of general motor skills, provide ample opportunity for the child to develop fine motor skills. Begin teaching discrimination of shape at an early age. Begin teaching set theory at an early age. Teach the child identification of what they encounter in the world. Provide opportunities to tactilely reinforce visually stimuli. Encourage kinesthetic exploration of the world. Provide the child with a maximally integrated multisensory experience exploring the world. As an Optometrist, I must also point out that an eye exam at an early age is necessary. Please look into the InfantSee program! (Go Glen Steele.)My answer is neither complete nor comprehensive but illuminates how complex the process of learning to learn is. It further reflects how early the process can be hampered. It also reflects that the foundation is laid at home and the schools are building upon what the parents must start. I hope others expand on my answer as it is a multidisciplinary approach that is necessary.Remediation programs should be implemented as early as the need is discoverable. I have seen many wonderful programs that are underfunded and underutilized. One that I see as extremely successful is the “Reading Recovery” first-grade reading intervention program. I believe it was founded by Marie Claire (?sp.) When remediation is necessary, the parent’ s assistance is necessary. Where I live, another problem is that the language of the country is not spoken in the home so the children are not only having to learn to read, they are having to learn to read at the same time they are learning the language. This is a monumental task to expect of a child. (I am not criticizing multilingualism.)Expanded adult literacy programs are not as readily available as needed. Somehow the stigma of owning up to one’s illiteracy and seeking help needs to be ameliorated.
