After some research, I learned she had actually been with us for so long because her foster parents had decided they couldn’t take care of her anymore, and the shelter she was from was currently full. I also learned she had been adopted and relinquished back to the shelter 3 TIMES due to her late-stage kidney disease and litter box problems. Seeing that she was adoptable, my heart raced. I had just returned the cat I had been long-term pet sitting (for 3 years) back to the owner and was desperate to get a new cat. I was so sad thinking that no one was willing to take care of this sweet girl, just because of her medical history. I knew I wanted her. Problem is, I was only 20 at the time and couldn’t apply to adopt her until I turned 21 6 months later.Fast forward to my 21st birthday and I go to check and see if Cozy is still available and SHE IS. I put my application in that day, and I wake up to an approval email. Two days later, I’m meeting with her newest fosters to take her home. Someone anonymous even covered her $100 adoption fee. I am fortunate enough that since I work at a vet’s office, I get discounts on her treatments for her kidney problems and her levels have been stable for the year I’ve had her (knock on wood). She's a weirdo who stares at walls, licks my toes, wakes me up at 4am and steals my socks from the laundry but now she's MY weirdo and I couldn’t be happier to be her mom.

No. It is not a realistic or prudent career to pursue if one has schizophrenia.There is psychological testing and the applicant's medical history including psychological diagnoses and treatment will be investigated. A person's mental health will be placed under extreme stress in police work. If there is a history of more than something like mild or short term depression or anxiety, I would not expect the applicant to get past that background investigation.Can you imagine the potential liability if an officer used deadly force or made a decision that caused severe permanent injuries to someone, and it was revealed that the agency knew that they had schizophrenia when they were hired? The other issue is that other officers must trust the person working with them to have their back when that person's judgment could mean life or death for them. This type of psychological condition is going to go over like a lead balloon with other officers who are sitting on a hiring board. There is no accommodation that can make this work okay given the critical nature of the job duties.
