I am a marine engineer , a sailor. I had sailed enough during my first sail. So much that I thought to come back on land for good. Fast forward to 5 years after quitting sailing and working for a very reputed shipyard in India for 4 years or so. I was working in estimation department. The one who does costing of entire vessel which needs to be presented to ship owners. Quite some responsibility as this was the one which brought business to the company, however my responsibility was supposed to be limited till excel sheet wherein I get quotes, negotiate and enter the numbers, later adding all up. Ofcourse a big thanks to the Yard team who would support me in getting the other numbers involved in actual construction of the vessel. I did so many vessel’s costing that by first year itself I was a pro, I didnt need to float RFQ’s since by now I had discovered the pattern of cost. My boss and his boss were happy with my performances, so much that by end of first year I was sitting with them in board room to discuss the pricing strategy. I thought it was time to ask for a boost viz increment. Approached my boss, who said to put it in writing, I was so happy when he said that because anything in writing is better than verbal accounts. He put that letter to his boss, who “approved” and said it will be done.Well it did happen but was 20% of 10% of what I asked. In other words, peanut’s shells. I said fuck it, maybe if I put more work, and harder and prove my worth, maybe they would notice me. So I started talking almost all task thrown at me, even which was not supposed to or didnt knew about. I at times used to cover for some F&A work, admin work, even legal work. This was 3rd year, I though maybe this is the right time to ask. So I did. This time again my boss said to put it in writing. By this time I realized that during last 2 years some of the people have gotten 10–40% raise without writing anything, and why I am writing. This was the day I discovered, my boss was a paper name. I did had my suspicions since I was filling his KPI/KPA report as well since last year. I was keeping all records of emails, communication, dairy, sheets, mine as well as his. So this time I again wrote a letter, and he followed similar route. Boss’s boss said it will done after a lengthy discussion with me. During same time I got an offer from another famous but fairly new shipyard. I declined due to personal issues as it required relocating. And I took a risk and mentioned this to my boss’s boss (COO). Oh BTW my boss was a VP. After that application I was called by CEO to talk things out. CEO was already impressed by me when he saw me at meetings so he was positive and wanted me to stay back. After negotiations he said he will meet my demands. Which he did, only I was naive to think that it wont have any conditions. The increment was supposed to be given at management’s discretion at each year’s evaluation. I knew that day I had to look for another opportunities. Oh didnt I mention that people got 10–40% increment without letters and meetings that year too?When I went back to my boss to confront him and take my side, he simply said that he cant do anything and his bosses are arseholes. (I never support such language anyway)So here I am, after giving a company 5 years of selfless dedication and hardwork, so much that my family used to argue on that. Specially when for a month when I clocked 12–14hrs at office and even after when management knew I was an asset and sent me to France for ToT as lead to a team of 5 and Korea for business tie-up with top management, there was still no hope for an promotion and increment. I left the company without saying goodby to my boss, who also happened to be my senior from same college.For all people who might think I was minting money from beginning and was hired at high post. I was hired as an Engineer at 3.25pa and stayed as Engineer with 4.5pa+1.5bonus “at management’s discretion”Today even when I am employed, I am searching a good boss who can actually hone my talent and pay me well as well.

I graduated three years ago.I wanted to pursue a master's degree and hence enrolled myself for a foreign language course (which is mandatory to get an admission in that country, even if the medium of education is in English). That master's degree would have worked out to an expense of about 7-8L for two years. The language course cost me 10K.However, I chose to work for some time before I went ahead and became a student all over again. I hunted down every opportunity, and ended in an R&D firm that paid me only 1 LPA.Though I loved my job, I was looking for one that would offer me better salary. I attempted many other non-committal job interviews (like BPOs and writing jobs). I was determined to leave the country in a year and did not want to be bound by any job-based commitment. The salaries ranged from 1.5-2 LPA. However, I didn't switch jobs, since I wasn't confident I would love my job there.I got the opportunity to attempt a couple of IT interviews. I cleared one that would have paid me 3 LPA and blew up another which was ready to offer me 4.5 LPA. Still, I chose to stick to research.I had people suggesting to me that I attempt bank exams (registration and preparation would have cost me hardly about 3-4K). Salary package was attractive at 4.25 LPA. But I loved my job and didn't want to sit in a place, punching in numbers, which I will certainly not be happy about.At the right time, I resigned my job as a researcher and started applying to universities. All the application preparatory procedures and every expense towards them, cost me 6-7K.My friend happened to suggest an interview at his company. I took it casually and cleared it too. It was an electronic manufacturing major offering me 2.7 LPA.I had a change of mind in the penultimate moment and settled for the manufacturing job.Meanwhile, I had been writing part time and I encashed the opportunity of becoming a freelance journalist. That paid me about 70-80 KPA.Today, I have given up manufacturing and have chosen writing, while in my sabbatical. I just turned down an HR-related offer of 5-odd LPA, since I do not want to be pressurised in my sabbatical that I have taken by choice. Now I sit at home all day and make convenient money, enough to make ends meet, as a writer.Tell me, did that help?
