What screams "I'm lower class" in Japan?

It is difficult to point out “screaming” factors of the poor in Japan. It would have been easy to say that UNIQLO/Daiso/Don Quijote shoppers, bicycle commuters, outdoor manual labor, Pachinko addicts, KEI car drivers, frequenters of Yoshinoya/Matsuya/CoCo Curry/Conveyer belt sushi joints etc. are the lower class. The fact is that these points even apply to some of our upper middle class people. One possible point could be the dwelling. The problem is that you’ve got to follow the person to his/her house to conclude your analysis. The other problem would be the possibility of slumming. Many university students from middle class families, who left their hometowns would be living in dingy apartments enjoying the stoic (but partying once in a while) lifestyle in exchange for their parents paying all tuition fees, rent and living allowances. This applies to kids who left their hometowns to experience glamorous city life in Tokyo as shop attendants, waitresses etc..Don’t jump to conclusions that their 1 room apartment is “a typical house in Japan”. Their parents probably live in a house with garage space for two cars, a little garden and the kids room unoccupied. Many J-Vlogers seem to be misguided to believe the shabby living standards of their local friends in Tokyo to be the national average of Japan. The income threshold for applying for public housing, as a rule, is something like 3 million JPY (27,000 US$) per annum or less. The problem is that some people “inherit” this. Say a boy lives in one of these apartments with his low income parents. He goes to college and after graduation gets a well paid job, say about 5 million JPY per annum. But he continues to live there with his parents. A complication. Further complications occur when there is monkey business in the allocation of a public apartment. A guy sits on the board to approve applications at the city hall. His daughter gets married. She wants to live in the public apartment, although she earns more than 3 million JPY per year. The apartment is adjacent to the shopping mall and only a minutes walk to the subway station. Daddy bends the rules.I think the “screaming” for us is more of a mentality, or even a spiritual issue for many of us. Not the financial wealth, but the quality of the education of both the studies and civility by ones parents is the point of importance for us.As we say in Japan, 親の顔を見てみたい | Oya no kao wo mite mitai | I want to see his/her parents’ faces, when we observe a bunch of misbehaving kids.

How is Uniqlo's business strategy different from Zara's and H&M's?

I’m not an expert but I work in footwear/ apparel industry and these are my opinions:Value positioning:Uniqlo = affordable, quality basics; Zara = trendiest; affordable to mid priced; H&M = Fashion at cheap price (cheapest among 3 brands)2. Operation:Uniqlo = production excellence through selecting big manufacturers; apply Japanese quality standards; repeat styles so it’s easier to make and even reach automation in some stages.Zara = a good mix between outsource production to third world countries and keeping manufacturing in Europe and nearby to maintain flexibility and speed to market.H&M: place orders/ sourcing from low cost manufacturers3. FocusUniqlo focuses on material innovation; fitting; production improvement and retail experience through tech applicationsZara focuses on trend forecasting; minimize design to product lead time (fast react)H&M: I think H&M has no focus at the moment, this partially explain the bad situation it is in right now with surplus inventory. Some can argue it focuses on keeping the lowest price compared to the other 2 but when you compare on a sku level, many H&M products are not even that cheap.4. Store openingUniqlo: extremely selective and careful with store opening; focus on opening big stores with good performanceZara: is shifting focus from store opening to towards ecommerce site.H&M: Too many stores, closing down many

Have you applied artificial intelligence to your business? If so, how has it worked?

I work at the intersection of AI and retail, specifically in the application of Computer Vision to improve search, discovery, and engagement for big retailers. The neural network models we develop are very narrow in scope, but are some of the highest performing for our specific verticals (product categories with highly visual buying behavior such as fashion, furniture, and decor).I work for a startup called ViSenze, if you’d like to learn more about what we do, check out our site. We’ve helped some of the biggest brands using computer vision, including H&M, Uniqlo, Adidas, Asos, and others. In the business world, AI is best (Read: most profitably) applied to solve very specific problems which have tons and tons of training data available and a high business value.Advertising is another example where AI is very successfully being applied, especially on platforms like Facebook. In fact, if you’ve ran a Facebook ad lately, you’ve probably already leveraged AI to benefit your business!I’m still relatively new to the industry and trying to learn as much as I can. Thanks for the question, looking forward to reading some other answers.
