What exactly does cancer do?
Here's a little (long-winded, actually) personal anecdote that I think will flesh out the more technical answers others have given. At least in my case.It started out with me occasionally waking up with haematuria, or blood in the urine. It was something like, "What the hell is that?", whenever it happened, but it only happened once every two or three weeks, so, me being a guy who doesn't run to the doctor every time I get some minor symptom, I guessed it was something that would go away. [Note: This was stupid. Of all the things that can be considered a "minor symptom", sudden haematuria with no known cause is something you should have looked at as soon as you can. Seriously.] I didn't even mention it to anyone until I woke up one morning, desperately needing to pee, but unable. Now that is a symptom stressful enough to want to see a doctor for. It's one of the worst feelings in the world, to really feel the need to pee, but having it blocked up. And it was blocked up. After a little while of trying, a blood clot shot out (sorry for the imagery - it's how it happened), followed by a long, relieving stream. That's when I confided in someone close to me. They, of course, told me to go to the doctor. [Note: This would have been the smart thing to do.] However, due to the fact that the insurance that covers me was making it very difficult to see a doctor (the American health system - what can I say?), particularly in combination with my lack of transportation at the time, the only realistic option was the ER, but if you go into the ER without the emergency actually happening at that moment, they're likely to tell you to go see a regular doctor, starting the whole thing over again. The problem was that when I would wake up with a clot blocking me, I was too desperate to leave my perch in the bathroom, hoping to push it out, to call an ambulance. So one morning, I woke up with that same problem, and after, I'm chatting online with my friend and they're again telling me that I should go to the doctor or the ER, and I'm repeating that I'm waiting for the situation to be right for the ER to actually see me. It was in the middle of this that I suddenly felt the pain. Actually, I want to rephrase that: "I suddenly felt pain." As in, for the first time in my life, because everything I had thought was pain before this could not hold a candle to this sucker. It was located in my lower left abdomen - I'd been enough of a fighter in my lifetime to recognize that it was coming from the left kidney. I'd actually felt a 'fullness' there before, but this went way beyond that. I told my friend that I was calling 911 and that's exactly what I did. They came and picked me up, then took me to the Memorial Hermann Hospital located on the northwest corner of I-610 here in Houston. The conditions were beyond ripe. I was in such pain that, as they did whatever paperwork they were going to do before treating me, I seriously considered trying to hobble out to the freeway and throwing myself in front of oncoming traffic if that would end the pain sooner. It probably wasn't even all that long before they were wheeling me into a room and setting me up with an IV and I finally got some relief from whatever it was they put in the IV. It was the first time I'd ever had a narcotic. At least legally. (I had some wild younger days.) After a while, they wheeled me over to radiology and took my first CT scan.A little while later, they came back and told me that it looked like there was "a mass" on my left kidney, but they couldn't tell more without a CT with contrast. Unfortunately, that required one of the hospital's urologists, and because of my Medicaid, they wouldn't see me. So they sent me home with a prescription for some narcotic and an antibiotic and an instruction to see a urologist covered by my insurance. Sigh.So I'm doing what I can to try to set up an appointment with a urologist, having even more trouble from my insurance than I did when I was trying to set one up with a general practitioner. About a week later, I've stopped taking my narcotic, thinking that I was feeling better from that initial pain (one reason I don't like narcotics - I want to know the pain is there, I just want it lessened so I can rest and sleep, but whatever I was taking was hiding it completely and fooling me), but the pain surprises me by coming back in full force. I wind up going to the ER again and the same thing happens again. This time, however, a nurse took pity on me and risked his job to whisper to me that the next time, I should ask the ambulance driver to take me to Ben Taub. Ben Taub Hospital, is part of the county system and it's where the indigent go if they have no insurance or, like me, their insurance makes other places refuse care for them.Anyway, for complicated reasons, I don't wind up going to Ben Taub for another year. I was hoping the nebulous 'mass' was just a pocket of infection and because I stopped experiencing the haematuria for a while, I figured that's what it was. But it came back and I wound up at Ben Taub's ER and I'm finally receiving fantastic treatment by some fabulous, if overworked and understaffed, doctors and nurses. And I mean those adjectives - they're wonderful people. Anyway, we finally get a CT with contrast. You want to know what cancer does? Well, in this case, my cancer - renal cell carcinoma, clear cell type - had transformed my left kidney and left it useless. You could see it clearly in the CT, as the doctor moved through the images by moving the mouse wheel at her computer. The right kidney was a fine, healthy looking thing, all ovular and clear lines. The left one... it was a monster. It was huge, a number of times the size of the right one, and with all sorts of wrinkles in it, like cauliflower or something. And it had this little spiky dot of hard calcification - the reason for the pain, most likely. The cancer cells had, in all that time I'd gone without treatment, completely taken over and mangled my left kidney. It was not functioning at all. (Fortunately, the right one was handling the workload just fine, and continues to.)After this, a whole lot of things happened that don't involve any answer to your question. But the point is that they eventually took it out; the procedure is called a radical nephrectomy. I asked if they would save it for me so I could keep it - I wanted to keep it in a fluid-filled jar on my desk and start talking to it when visitors were overstaying their welcome - but they wouldn't let me do that. Anyway, that should have been it, but they wanted to do a few more tests to make sure it hadn't moved anywhere else. And this is something else cancer does sometimes: It metastasizes. Mine did. There are bits of these crazy, out-of-control kidney cells on my right lung now. I can't tell you what that looks like. I really want to get copies of the scans someday and then maybe I can share them.So far, I have no symptoms from this and I'm on a medication that will hopefully keep it from growing. There's nothing that will absolutely get rid of metastatic renal cell carcinoma at the moment, but there are things that might be in the works, so if they keep me alive long enough, I might make it to try one of those. Well, that's also if access to health care improves, because otherwise I'm not likely to get anything brand new, but still. There's still hope is what I'm saying. So, that's the effect cancer has had on my body. I'm actually pretty damn lucky as I've met and talked to many other cancer patients and a lot of them are going through much worse both with their cancers and their treatments. And that's the problem with answering your question: There's the basic answer, which is that cells start growing uncontrollably (that's an oversimplification, but true enough), but then what happens after depends on where the cells are growing, how aggressive they are, what bodily systems they affect, and what treatments are available. So to really have an idea of what it does, it might be good to read case files made public or something like that.
If Doctor Who started as an American show in 1963 what actors in the same time periods as the original British version, who would you cast?
I LOVE this question! Thank You! Below are my choices for actors if Doctor Who had been an American show. I have tried to choose actors who are about the same age as the British actors. I have also tried (at least a little) to match the personalities with the British version.William Hartnell: Noah Beery, Jr. Best known as Rockford’s dad, he would have been a great first Doctor.Patrick Troughton: Mickey Rooney. Other possibilities: Bill Cullen, Jack Warden, or possibly Walter Matthau. Note I resisted the temptation to go with Moe Howard, but mostly because of his age.Jon Pertwee: Gene Barry. Other possibilities: Martin Balsam or Jack Palance, who would be interesting since there was a dark component to the third Doctor, given the Time Lords wiped part of his memory on how to use the TARDIS.Tom Baker: This is the toughest one for me to cast, since Tom Baker was my Doctor (the first Doctor I experienced). I am going to go with Van Williams who played the lead in The Green Hornet. But it isn’t a slam dunk. Richard Chamberlain, George Segal, and Lawrence Luckinbill would also be interesting choices.Peter Davison: Robin Williams. That was an easy choice, wasn’t it? Can you imagine? Other possibilities: There are so many — Kurt Russell, Richard Thomas, Chris Cooper, Timothy Bottoms, Barry Van Dyke, and William Katt would all be interesting.Colin Baker: Kurtwood Smith. This was also a tough one just because Colin Baker’s Doctor was so unpopular. (I later came to really appreciate his performance when I finally had the chance to see William Hartnell’s first Doctor). Other Possibilities: Edward Hermann, Christopher Walken, Charles Haid.Sylvester McCoy: Harry Shearer. Other possibilities: Don Novello, Paul Michael Glaser, Bruce Weitz.Paul McGann: Paul McGann. Since the TV movie was an attempt to reboot the series for U.S. audiences by Fox, no other actor is necessary.John Hurt: John Hurt. Strictly speaking, as The War Doctor, he’s not really considered part of the continuity. But Paul McGann did regenerate into him and then he regenerated into Christopher Eccleston, so he gets inserted here. I can’t imagine anyone else playing The War Doctor.Christopher Eccleston: I’m tempted to leave him as well (since he is my favorite of the new series), and because he is known to U.S. audiences for shows like Heroes, but I feel like that’s cheating, especially since I already left two in place. So let’s go with Nicolas Cage. Other possibilities: Matt Dillon, Keanu Reeves, Blair Underwood, Don Cheadle.David Tennant: So many good choices here. I’m going with Alan Tudyk. Other possibilities: Michael C. Hall, Jared Leto, Peter Billingsley.Matt Smith: Joseph Gordon-Levitt. No other choices. He’d be that good.Peter Capaldi: Viggo Morgenson. Other possibilities: there are so many fantastic choices for people about the same age as Peter Capaldi — Tim Robbins, Bruce Campbell, Alec Baldwin, Jello Biafra, and I have to mention Neil DeGrasse Tyson, because how cool would that be?
Why did Germany lose the air superiority over Western Europe when they have the homeland advantage just like the British during the Battle of Britain?
A straight forward answer is, the German Luftwaffe could NOT replace, or train new, for all of its its dead or injured air crews, or its increasingly large number of worn out, and shot down aeroplanes from the now declining German military industrial output.Above; legendry Me 262 jet Fighter found in a Russian forest.Despite having very advanced Modern military jet Aircraft designs in service in 1944, the airfields became rapidly overrun by the advancing Red Armies in the East, and by the Allied American and Commonwealth British and French forces in the West.By April 1945 it was “All over” for g ermany’s Luftwaffe. A wrecked Airforce base inside Germany 1945 showing smashed and broken German aircraft.German industry could not rebuild, repair or replace aircraft, or the crews for them in time due to disruption from increasing allied bombing raids.American officers inspect a captured intact German Me 262 jet fighter, which the workers simply could not complete in time before the area was overrun by allied soldiers;Berlin Templehoff Airfield just after cessation of hostilities in 1945. Note the great many “spare” or salvaged unused German aeroplane parts left lying around everywhere;Note the Russian Ilyushin Stormovik Ground attack aircraft parked on the old German runway.Above; by 1944 /45 days when the Luftwaffe enjoyed air superiority, as in this wartime sketch by Hans Liska, were long over, and allied and Russian air-forces had control of Europes skies.Strategic Air raids and the “shooting up” of German equipment at Airfields was also a strong reason why the Luftwaffe failed to be a real threat in the last months of the war.German industrial re supply trains, road networks, bridges and factories all were under increasing air attack disruption from allied air superiority .target destroyed returning to base…..Above British Bomber command “Handley Page Halifax” bomber aircraft drop explosives onto German industry in the German Industrial Rhur region 1944. Round the clock night and day the Nazi industries were bombed into submission.B 17 flying Fortress USAAF American bombers dropped thousands of tons of high explosives down into Nazi war industry, and the RAF Royal Airforce of England continued to drop the same by night time. The fascists were denied any time to effectively repair all the damage, which rose to cripple the German industrial war effort.Below. a French Keffer Commando operation against German Luftwaffe prestige on CRETE in 1942, with greek and also british soldiers takeing part, despite overwhelming German control of the territory, showed the shape of things to come for the Luftwaffe; French commando’s destroyed virtually ALL Hitler’s available transport and refuelling re supply aircraft based on Crete, seriously hindering Erwin Rommel’s Afrika korp’s efforts to capture the Suez canal and join up with Von Paulus in the Caucasus oil fields. this raid by French commando’s seriously altered the course of the war in the Mediterannean and North Afrika.Destroyd Aircraft types operating from Crete at the time included the Ju 52 and Me 323 Gigant for transport, the Ju 88 and Ju 86 for bombing and photo-reconnaissance and the Bf 109 as a fighter.Prestige giant Nazi transport aircraft got shot and blown to bits by French Greek and British commandos during “operation Albumen” in Crete 1942. Rommel had implicitly relied upon them to ferry over his precious petrol for his panzers. Soon he was defeated…Von Paulus soon surrendered in Russia at Stalingrad. there would be NO German rescue. And spare parts to repair surviving “made it home” aeroplanes, were increasingly simply not “available” to do the repairs and put the planes back into circulation.German Industrial and military replacement became impossible, and numbers of operational aircraft or crews to actually fly them, became impossible to sustain.Chronic shortage of Aviation fuel due to allied round the clock bombing of G erman control’d Romanian oil refineries was another major factor in erosion of effective.German Air force personnel simply could not be “replaced” with fresh well trained recruits. By Winter 1944 fuel drums and tankers at Military Airfields were empty often more than full.German Officers and flight engineers were shot down and killed or captured as Allied troops overran Europe. There was no “homeland advantage”.Loss of Esprit De Corps. Loss of Fuel. Loss of Aircraft; Loss of Moral. Loss of Pilot officer training time.By late 1944 during Operation “watch on the Rhine”, the Ardennes offensive, Germany fielded a larger number of aircraft than had been capable of flying in such numbers “for a long time” but despite this effort, the allied fighters and anti aircraft gunners shot them down in ever increasing numbers, partly due at least, to bad flight training and dangerous “fly high and wide” tactics used by the now incredibly young, inexperienced German Aircrews; The Luftwaffe order to Pilots late war became “If machine or motor gets damaged you are to turn back”.I flew up behind the Focke Wulf, I fired two short bursts of ammunition. The landing gear lowered, *and “out pop’d the pilot with his parachute”.The terrified young German “boy” baling out of his Focke Wulf 190 over the Ardennes 1944. Both German replacement soldiers and pilots were “emptied from the schools” by Hitler in the final year of the war….“You are the lucky ones to have this great priviledg” Adolf Hitler, his arm shaking from drug induced parkinsonism, shakes the hands of boy German soldiers in 1944 many of whom were shortly killed afterwards trying to defend him in a Forest near Berlin.Germany’s Airforce and overall Military situation day to day had become hopeless, it was merely by now, so late in the war time, a question only of how much time before defeat in 1945.True story from a late war Mosquito Pilot who encountered a German Fighter crewed by a very young inexperienced pilot late in 1944.*Lowering your “landing Gear” or wheels, meant you had surrendered and given up and were going to bale out”.With the Allies at the door, and the Russians swarming all over a defeated berlin, the end finally came….“No enemy aircraft shall fly over the Reich territory” he once promised….German Nazi leader of the Luftwaffe Air force for Adolf Hitler, Air marshal Hermann Goering was captured in 1945 and sent to trail in Nuremberg for war crimes. he chose to take poison and committed suicide in prison.Sadly, that was “not quite the end “ of Hermann Goerings’ evil “legacy”.Jonathan Arkush, vice president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, said the sale was "repellent".He had been allowed to design his own uniform, looted a vast collection of stolen art treasures from Europe and Russia, and amassed an enormous cave cellar full of stolen wine at his luxury house….found by AMERICAN Soldiers at finish of the german War in 1945.Goering’s Residencies all were overrun by American GI Soldiers who found stolen Art work, Wine and Antiques taken from Murdered Jews. What happened to his REAL clothes and Uniform? likely taken by Souvenire Hunters back to the united States at end of the war. it really is HIGHLY UNLIKELY that Mr John Robert Taylor of PARADE ANTIQUES Plymouth barbican can possibly have come to get his hands on a real Goering Nazi uniform.Recently around 2010, another FAKE copy of his uniform, claimed by Taylor to be the “genuine” Hermann Goering Great coat and Service hat, said by others to be a FAKE made by a Movie clothes company, possibly in China*, got sold by the same Robert Taylor Plymouth Antiques dealer in England for far more than it was worth….Now Mr Taylor “is up to his old dirty tricks again”.It BEGGARS BELIEF Mr Taylor has both acquired and sold the ENTIRE GOERING UNIFORM. No record or comment has ever been forthcoming over the “provenance” or origins of said “uniform”, so suspect they are both fakes. So, now there remains the VERY SERIOUS QUESTION LEGALLY OF THE VERY LARGE FINANCIAL PAYMENT ASKED OR RECIEVED TO MR TAYLOR AND THAT LIKELY THE UK LAWS HAVE BEEN BROKEN BY HIM.'Goering' Nazi uniform in Plymouth shop 'should be burnt'Image caption The uniform is claimed to have once belonged to Hermann GoeringIn 2010 Mr Chevallier saw and personally inspected this “Uniform”. And is totally convinced and persuaded by what he saw, that this “Nazi” uniform is a complete FAKE ARTICLE once made for a Movie film. The methods and materials are NOT Authentic or contemporary for the claimed price or period.'Goering' Nazi uniform in Plymouth shop 'should be burnt'This is not the FIRST “Goering” Uniform this dodgy Dealer has sold; in 2010 he also “claimed” to have Goering’s Grey Long overcoat” and Military “hat” but again, other’s said this was once again a FAKE Movie type re make using non original materials and Non original stitching, glue and pressing method’s NOT contemporary with Nazi German of the 1930’s.Surely then, Mr Taylor is therefore GUILTY under U.K. law, of the very serious crimes of “OBTAINING MONEY BY DECEPTION”.The UK Legal process or law relevant is Described on the Link below.Fraud Act 2006, TheMr Taylor and his “Nicholas van Hoogstraten” / “Peter Rackmann” type private Plymouth landlord brother in law, Phillip Rump (his brother in law) of Clever Student lettings, stole valuable items from Mr Chevallier because of this. They are NAZIS. And Mr Chevallier exposed them. They THEN SENT MEN TO BEAT HIM UP BREAK INSIDE HIS LISSOM GROVE RENTED APARTEMENT CITY BUSINESS PARK TOY FIGURE FACTORY AND TO STEAL BOOKS CLOTHES ANTIQUES AND COMPUTER EQUIPMENT AND TO STEAL A HIGHLY VALUABLE STOCK OF RARE COLLECTABLE AND ANTIQUE TOY SOLDIERS AND THOUSANDS OF POUNDS WORTH OF MODEL KITS. THEY ALSO STOLE FAMILY HEIRLOOMS AND HIS AUNTIES COLLECTION OF GENUINE WEDGEWOOD POTTERY WARE AND A DEACTIVATED RUSSIAN SUB MACHINE PPSH GUN, AND MANY OTHER GOODS. THE STOLEN TOY SOLDIERS WERE THEN CAUGHT BEING ILLEGALY SOLD BY PARADE ANTIQUES AND MR TAYLOR ON E BAY UK AND REPORTED. WE HAVE SOLID EVIDENCE FOR ALL THIS TOO.Mr Chevallier and his friends were driven out by RACIST English Right wing extreme right Anti Semitisme and Xenophobic HATE CRIMES. Some of those were actually carried out by former professional “British soldiers” !!!!!!One former British soldier, the man who threatened and intimidated Mr Chevalliers friends out of their shop, who ran a surplus supplies type shop nearby, had TWO STOLEN JEWISH GRAVE TOMB STONES carved in Jewish Hebrew, and the Imperial German flag draped over them outside his shop, in BLATANT NAZISM.NOTHING OF THIS SORT SHOULD BE EVER DONE IN ENGLAND !!!!!Mr Maxime Jouhan Chevallier was beaten up and robbed by the family of this Plymouth “Antiques Dealer” who then sold all his belonging s from his Plymouth toy soldier shop and arranged to have him beaten up again and nearly murdered, in league and co operation with the English Extreme Right; M r Chevallier, formerly of Lissom grove, Plymouth, and owner and manager of French based UK retailer outlet Company shop ”Soldats de Ligne” who operated from P arade Antiques in Plymouth in 2009; to 2010, had become friends with a family of shop keepers who were Azari refugees sheltering in England, who were also at the same time threatened with violence, and driven also out of their shops. Another nice lady who made ball room gowns and her daughter were driven out of their shop by Landlord John Robert Taylor and his family of Plymouth 3Scum bag landlords” IPS Lettings (who have now after the scandal changed their name to “clever student lettings”. Mr Chevallier has also been constantly harassed, threatened, shot at and pursued by run away former “British soldiers” he once actually raised charity funds for, because of all this.Right wing Extreme RIGHT neo Nazi former British “soldiers” were sent to steal from Mr Chevallier and stole his Seven ton motor home in Saint Antonin Noble val , Tarn Garronne Southern France, and left him for “dead”.Mr Chevallier was victim of secret German Nazi research by German SS Doctor Walter Edouard (under the false identity of Doctor Edward “Ted” Bastin”) working for the Uk ministry of Defence in the 1970’s until Bastin’s work was exposed by the United States “Senate Church Government Hearing”.Mr “Max” Chevalier is the son of a woman who came to England in 1939 from France, fleeing persecution by Adolf Hitler and the Nazis. his English step father was a special Royal navy commando on HMS Searcher an Aircraft carrier on secret missions to Russian port of Murmansk during the second world war.Mr Chevallier previously supported the Charity “help for Hero’s” and took a very big part in a campaign for saving the Military Cenotaph Shepton mallet war memorial in his old home town in Somerset. Mr Chevallier “No longer believes in or supports any such thing” after the abusive violence directed against him and his family.Lest we forget”. Mr Chevallier’s Grandfather “Harry Padfield” fought in Ypres salient in World War one, his English stepfather Jack Padfield as a sailor in World War Two, and his Scottish brother in law (censor) fought on board HMS ……(censor) during the Fakland’s Conflict in the South Atlantic.(Born Quentin John Padfield) in 1966; Mr Chevallier built a successful website, and met with local Shepton mallet persons to help them to save the war memorial cenotaph from destruction by a corrupt town council, who wanted to make a supermarket there; Since then, he has been actively pursued by FAR RIGHT Nazi former “British soldiers” who were “encouraged” to drive him out of Shepton mallet and then Plymouth, and who violently attacked him again later in French territory. But Mr Chevallier was insulted, called racist names, and violently assaulted and beaten up by English Nazis. Some of them runaways from the UK Army hiding in France.Mr Chevallier is currently owed 27,000 pounds for his stolen apartment contents, 47,000 in stolen toy soldier plastic kit and antiques stock, and another 48;000 in stolen Toy “Sarum” Figurine soldier metal models that Robert Taylor, and Phillip RUMP, (IPS Clever student lettings) Plymouth “landlord” and closet NAZI has stolen from him.Mr Taylor also intimidated a local café restaurant owner, driving them out of their business premises, and then tryd to “sell” the families own business behind their backs for 27,000 ! Mr Chevallier reported all this, or at least, tryd to do so, at Plymouth “north Central” police post in 2009 and Spring of 2010. he was then beaten up and driven out of Plymouth., and assaulted when he try’d to return to collect his belongings later.PHILLIP RUMP of the then tradeing “IPS LEttings LTD” who rented mr Chevalliers Lissom grove Apartement to him, “lost” several rent receipts RIGHT AFTER he had REPORTED a break in at his Lissom Grove Apartement (they also cut his electricity off three times before and over Christmas) and ruined three freezers full of food planned for a Christmas family celebration). IPS 3LTTINGS3 then tryd “somehow” despite Mr Chevallier’s bank having PROOF OF PAYMENT TO THEM, that he had “not paid rent” and this was used as an “excuse” to get him moved against his will out from his apartement. Criminal associates of RUMP and TAYLOR kept mr Chevallier from returning to recover his belongings, later they were paid FOUR THOUSAND OUNDS to “return his belongings” but only a lorry full of broken, smashed, missing and badly damaged items was delivered by a UK haulier, to him in France. This abuse has cost poor Mr Chevallier 4,000 in payment to IPS Lettings (now Clever Student lets) and 1, 175.00 to a UK Transport company to deliver to him. Some time later, Mr Chevallier returned to England to Plymouth, filed a report about the abuse with Plymouth City Council and visited Taylors shop to attempt to recover the valuables they had stolen from him. John Robert Taylor ran away and could “not be found”….A uniform claimed to have belonged to Nazi Hermann Goering should be burned and not sold, Jewish leaders have said. The uniform is on sale for £85,000 at Parade Antiques in Plymouth - a city that Goering's Luftwaffe planes bombed extensively in World War Two.Jonathan Arkush, vice president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, said the sale was "repellent". Author of this article Mr Maxime Jouhan Chevallier agrees with him.Shop owner John Cabello said the item was a reminder of Nazi atrocities and did not glorify them.Goering was one of the most senior politicians in Nazi Germany and a close confidante of Hitler. He had promised Hitler he could keep the Sixth German army re supplied from the Air at Stalingrad, but he failed….Failure at Stalingrad; Pitomnik (means in Russian “ Plant nursery”) German control’d Airfield 1943.
