And one way to know is to pay for your medical records including Dr notes from each visit.I discovered this about 15 years ago when Dr notes were kept with the patient file until a certain number of pages were reached at a clinic I used for medical care.My file was in the slot on the door, and I just took it inside with me, and started to read. Not for any real reason, except I had waited a couple of hours and was bored. WOW! Was I enlightened! I was also admonished by the nurse, who informed me the records belonged to the clinic and I could not read my own records without the doctors permission.I weighed about 270 lbs at 5′3″ , and was encouraged to lose weight at each visit. I learned that I was considered someone who was not medically compliant with doctor's orders.Also, my joints were always swollen and painful, and I was seen as a person with drug-seeking behaviors. I had asthma, couldn't sleep for long, and was depressed. One of the doctors felt I was generally a mess, and would most likely not benefit from new meds or more frequent appointments, and I used up too many resources at that clinic. I was also diabetic, and had hypertension. Talk about an eye-opening day!Fortunately for me, a new, very young doctor from Peru took my case. He was a foot shorter than me and 20 years younger, but was not yet jaded by many poor, sick, older, somewhat ignorant patients at the clinic.He spent time with me, knew my medical history along with my life situation. He learned about health issues he wasn't experienced with, and is most likely the reason I am alive today.I weigh 144 less pounds, control diabetes with diet, and take less hypertension meds.So if you find your own physician writes notes that aren't in your best interest, or that you feel dismisses your health concerns, find a new one. Some doctors are just asses.

Not a Dr or Nurse, but office personnel.To me, this is as abusive as actually physically abusing a patient.I worked for a Cardiologist, who had scheduled a patient that was coming from (I think) a nursing home.This poor patient came in and smelled so badly of poor hygiene that we had to open all the windows (in the middle of winter), and not use that exam room for the rest of the day.I’ve been working in medical offices for over 30 years and this happened well over 20 years ago. I still remember that particular patient. I felt so badly for her. Obviously where she was staying was not taking good care of her.I’ve never, before or since, seen a Dr. note that a patient’s lack of personal care is effecting her health.

My Mom went to bat for me in an awesome way.I was in High School and won a place on the Scholastic team. The whole team went by bus to a college 1.5 hours away to take tests—grade specific—to win awards and possibly get college scholarships. I wasn’t wearing a watch so couldn’t tell when to meet back at the bus. After my test I started reading in a big room where all the students could hang out so that I’d know when to leave. Not a single person bothered to tell me it was time to leave and the Vice Principal believed the other students that I was on the bus—not many of them liked me.A half hour before the Student Union closed I realized I was alone (it was a good book). I desperately had to find money for the pay phone (long before cell phones) to call my Mom. She was MAD. She made some calls and the Vice Principal and Principal came to get me.Epilogue: Later in the year I was sick for 2 weeks—Dr note and all—and the teacher wouldn’t let me makeup the homework or tests. She was eager to fail me. Well Mom called the school and reminded them of what had happened earlier in the year. Suddenly I could take the tests and scored high enough to pass with an A-.
