Regexes are very powerful tools that are based on an important concept in computer science and automata theory (regular expressions and regular languages). However, they have a number of issues which can limit their acceptance and use:They are hard to write. Think about a relatively simple case, where you are trying to use a regex to parse a US phone number that's been standardized in the form "(123) 456-7890" (an actual task I had at work a couple of months ago, and you want to match each of the three sets of numbers. You want to both match "(", and use "(" in the regex for grouping, giving you something like "\((\d{3})\) (\d{3})-(\d{4})", maybe.They are hard to read. Can you tell immediately what the previous Regex is doing? How about: "\d{5}(-\d{4}(-\d{2})?)?|[A-Z]\d[A-Z] \d[A-Z]\d"? That should match US or Canadian postal codes.They are not as powerful as many people think. Regexes are not magical, and it is entirely possible to define strings which can't be matched by a regex. There are common examples: RFC-822 compliant email addresses and XML being two of the most common.There is somewhat limited standardisation. Do you quote special symbols or syntactic symbols (e.g., should the phone number example be "\((\d{3})\) (\d{3})-(\d{4})" or "(\(\d{3}\)) \(\d{3}\)-\(\d{4}\)")? If there are multiple matches, that begin at the same place, can you choose between longest match and shortest match? How? Different implementations of regex in different languages have different answers to these, and many other questions.They don't typically look like the language they are embedded in. While there are some exceptions (perl, awk, sed), usually regexes, and their use, are bolted in with a regex class, so to use them you have to write something like regex = Regex.New("\((\d{3})\) (\d{3})-(\d{4})"); matches = regex.Match(phonenumber); areacode=matches[0]; exchange= matches[1]; line=matches[2]; which could be equally done with substring extraction. Compare with Perl, which would use (areacode, exchange, line) = phonenumber~= /\((\d{3})\) (\d{3})-(\d{4})"); using the regex as a literal, a dedicated matching operator, which can return multiple values.So you have a technique which can often be replaced by more ad-hoc methods, isn't the same from platform to platform, is bulky and hard to use, is hard to write, hard to read, and has a somewhat small window where it is better than the alternatives and can still get the job done.
