PDF Editor FAQ

How do I get papers for my quarter horse?

A good horse is a good horse regardless of papers…they can’t read anyway. There are details on the AQHA website. I answered this from my memory (not always perfect). Contacting AQHA and explaining the details of your situation will get you the best answer.Papers are important for resale ( proof of age, Pedigree, ownership, etc) and showing if you planned to show AQHA.If you purchased it with out paperwork you may not be able to get papers. Request all known information from the previous owners such as both parents of the horse and age etc. You may be able to prove it’s parentage with DNA testing. I am not sure if AQHA can help with this or not. Be prepared for some expenses, testing is around $100.00, penalties for late registration, etc. You can hope the previous owners will help you, but don’t count on it. They may not have the information you would need.If you purchased it with registration in hand, you need to send a signed transfer to AQHA. That is a transfer form with the previous owners signature and your information on it.If you purchased a foal with “registration pending ” the previous owners should have provided you with paperwork, transfer etc, to get it in your name.If you lost the paperwork but the horse was registered in your name already, duplicat papers can be ordered from AQHA.If it is a foal, both parents need to be AQHA registered in order for the foal to be registered. This is best done before it is 6 months old. There needs to be a stallion report with a five panel DNA test (on stud) filed with AQHA or this becomes a nightmare….speaking from experience here. Exception is AQHA bred to TB then there is another process for possible papers. With any breed, if you expect to own a registered horse, that paperwork should come with the horse or you should be prepared for a struggle to get them.

How do you prove the ownership of a horse?

In some registered breed associations the current owner is on the papers. The description has to match. There are also parentage DNA tests available that match the horse to the papers, making sure the horse is the one on the papers with current owner listed. Transfer of ownership is proven by different means in different breed registries. AQHA provides for a transfer with paper work that should be given from former owner to new owner at time of purchase or a signed bill of sale.Grade or unregistered horses should be accompanied by a Bill of Sale at the time of purchase.Any of these kinds of papers should be kept and follow the horse through it’s owners. Often bills of sale are not kept with the horse but that makes determination of age and identification difficult.

How many times can a horse give birth?

Once a year. Gestation is 11 months. Most quality broodmares are re-bred every year on their foal heat, which usually occurs about a week or so after giving birth. AQHA allows mares to have multiple foals a year, thru embryo transfer. A single mare may be able to have 18–20 foals in her lifetime, before she's too old to safely carry and deliver a baby
