I think it is important the first time you teach a lesson.I’m speaking as a high school teacher where the average time you have a group of students is 70–90 min.I need to figure outWhat do I want them to know and/or know how to do.What background might they need/have/some have-some not haveHow will they acquire the knowledge/skill and what are the most likely hiccups /roadblocksHow will I assess if they have learnedHow long each part of the lesson should take approximatelyWriting this stuff down however formally or informally works for you forces you to process and reflect. Mental rehearsal of anything prepares you for the actual event. Taking time to reflect post lesson on what did and didn’t work and what needs to be changed is important as well and should be written down.The second and third time a lesson is taught planning needs to be less and less formal in my opinion. Your experience is now the plan, but expect it to still change organically as you tweak it each time. If you have been teaching for any amount of time you know there will be happy accidents along the way that make the lesson better and you will work to incorporate them next time.Saturate yourself in your content and planning is part of it. The more an expert you can be in the details of your content the more your planning will come naturally as you see threads running through your individual lesson that make up the tapestry of the content for the year.
