Religion’s influence on national InstitutionsIn Pakistan, till the year 2000, Hindu citizens were not allowed to join the Armed forcesEven now, if Muslim soldiers are martyred in the line of duty, they are honored as “shaheed”, but Hindu soldiers, if martyred, are simply called as “late”The term “shaheed” (Urdu for martyr) is reserved for Muslim soldiers only [5]First Hindu citizen to be appointed as judge in a civil court in Pakistan happened only in 2019 [6]In India, there has never been any religion-based restriction to join any state institution. The first Muslim judge to make it to the Supreme Court of India was Syed Fazl Ali in 1950. Its just that things are done differently in two societiesA pluralist society like India seems to cultivate the culture of “Happy Diwali everyone, Merry Christmas everyone, Eid Mubarak everyone”. A homogeneous society like Pakistan seems to result in “Eid Mubarak everyone” but “Happy Diwali to Hindus” and “Merry Christmas to Christians”.
