Bearys Institute of Technology, Mangalore.Some salient features of this college - or should I say school:Uniforms compulsory for all 4 yearsMorning prayers compulsory. That's right. Every morning, entire college has to gather in the ground for a prayer where everyone sings "E Malik tere bande hum". Extreme care is taken so that no one misses it. The physical education teacher goes around the campus making sure no one is hiding in the classroom. If anyone is found hiding, the are immediately escorted to the ground. Anyone who hasn't attended prayer gets no attendance for the entire day.eInteraction between boys and girls was not encouraged outside classroom. The few couples who existed in college faced a lot of harassment from lecturers and management.Being a technical college, we expect industry people to come and give talks on the latest technology. They did come, if you consider Mosques and Madrasas as industries. We had regular talks on importance of prayer, dressing decently and giving yourself to God.No mobile phones in college and hostel even though the college was located in some remote godforsaken forest.We were once standing in the bus stop waiting for a bus. We were 3rd year guys - the first batch of the college. Besides us was a bunch of guys who had come for seeking seat in the college. One of them came to us and asked "Hey, how many people have gotten placed in IBM?" . We were like what? Turns out the college had told them that lots of 4th years have gotten placed in IBM and overall it was 100% placement. They didn't tell them that there were no 4th year batch till now and the 3rd years had not even gotten offer from More supermarket.The brochure said amazing things about the college. That's how I got fooled as well. So here's a glimpse of what brochure said and what was the reality.Brochure: International quality cafeteriaReality : There was one room general store which was selling samosas and biriyanis which he used to make in the back. No sign of cafeteria anywhere.Brochure: High speed internet connectivity.Reality: Not even 2G was available due to remote location of the college.Brochure: Placements in IBM, Wipro, Infosys, Cognizant.Reality: One company came. It was named "Sun Dial". Turns out it's some fake company. The company was asking for 1.5 Lakhs from students if they want to be selected. Funny thing is brochure told 100% placements.Brochure: International quality playgrounds and gym.Reality: Only gym equipments were the iron slabs in mechanical lab. The playground was basically a open ground ( some else's property) where cows used to graze. We had to chase away the cows with bats and wickets to play a game of cricket.These were just some of the atrocities we had to endure in this college. There were some good points as well. Everyone was united and had a great group of friends - mainly because we had one common cause uniting us, which is our hatred towards the college. There were some good lecturers who tried their best to teach us. Also the college was set in a great location. Greenery all around and set on top of a hill. The college infrastructure was designed well and in the rainy season, it would look like a resort. It was the perfect place to relax since there were no distraction of phone or the outside world. If only they had planned to build a meditation centre instead of an engineering college, things would have been perfect.I have heard things have changed,atleast infrastructure wise. They finally have a cafeteria it seems and a proper gym. Heard they got some basketball court as well. But it was too late for our batch.Some more edits:Brochure: International quality mechanical labsReality: There was not even a lathe machine in the lab. Entire semester we learnt how to use lathe machine by a youtube video prected on wall.Special incidents:Chairman: Why did you come late for my speech?Student: Sir..*( is interrupted, slapped and beaten up in front of other students.Student: (very angry) mera abba [dad] ne be itna nai mara muje.. mai….mai..*(gets beaten up some more)…

This was the most strangest reply i ever heard from a person to whom i asked "Why did you take XXXX branch in any IIT?"The story is about a very good friend of mine who comes from a village in Andhra Pradesh. He got a decent rank and ended up in Biotechnology at IIT Guwahati.One day while talking about the placement scenario in his branch, he seemed to be quite disappointed with the previous years statistics.Looking at him i tried to buck him up by saying "Its ok dude, don't worry ....you chose this because you were interested and passionate to learn the stuff"" ..... and then i asked him THE QUESTION, "Btw dude, uh i'm just curious to know what made you to choose this branch?" to which he replied "What do i know, i just filled up my branch option list during admission according to the order given in the brochure(usually the list of branches in the brochure are in alphabetical order:P)".I was just flabbergasted.Btw we are 2013 pass outs and still in contact :)
