PDF Editor FAQ

What’s the rudest experience you ever had at a dealership?

This was my wife’s experience not mine and happened at a large ford dealership in Ottawa some years ago. We had decided that since the Japanese would not buy Canadian or other foreign manufactured products, we would not buy a Japanese car but would go for a North American built vehicle. My wife had read a booklet on “bad things that happen to women in car dealerships” and indeed every indignity that was in the booklet happened to her. When the salesman told her to bring her husband in, she walked out and bought a Toyota.Several years later, I decided that I wanted a Mustang (mid-life crisis?) and went back to the same large dealership. As it happened, I had the money in the bank and my checkbook with me to pay in full for the car. My daughter was very young at the time and I was carrying her and without going into all the details, was treated like dirt by the salesman who did not even want to give us a brochure. He apparently decided that anyone with a young child would not actually buy a mustang. A similar bad experience happened at another Ford dealership the next week and I finally decided to fix up my old car instead and invest the money that I would have used to buy the car. That turned out to be a very good business decision and I have occasionally mentally thanked the two idiots who treated us with such contempt.

What is a sign that you just need to get up and walk out of the car dealership?

When they refuse to show you any cars unless you agree to buy one today. When they get mad at you for wasting their time showing you cars when is a slow rainy day and there are no other customers at the dealership. When they laugh at you and tell you you made it up when you ask about a feature of the car you read about in the car’s brochure.‘You look too young to be buying a car’, when you are in your 20sWhen they tell lies like:‘I promise I will drive your girlfriend to work every day until she passes her driver’s test if you buy the car today’‘The price of the car will double tomorrow so you best buy it today’When you ask to see the invoice of the car and they show you a badly faded piece of paper from an old printer in need of new ink on plain white paper with no company letterhead on it. If they don’t want to show you the invoice, they should just say so instead. When you go into a dealership to buy a new car and they say they have the perfect car for you and they take you into the way back of the used car lot and show you an old clunker. Then later you get home and find out even the old clunker was priced way above what it is worth. When you bring them your old car for a trade in and they conveniently lose the keys so you can’t leave the dealership. I learned to always bring a spare set of keys or better yet, sell the old car to someone different from whom you buy the new car. When you agree to a price of the car and then go back to get your checkbook to buy it and they decide the price they agreed on was too low. When they make you wait a long time while they are closing a deal with another customer and they keep saying ‘5 more minutes’.When they see your old car and assume you can’t afford a new car so they don’t take you seriously when you come to buy a car. When they make a big hassle over your credit before you are even ready to buy the car. When they put you in that little room and they walk out for long periods of time, supposedly to talk to the manager but probably to drink coffee or something. When they only let you do very short test drives.

What was the slickest thing you have done or seen when negotiating a car price?

the guy pretended to lose the keys to my used car. After he did this, I decided not to sell my used car to him, though I did end up buying a new car there.the guy quoted me at one price for an extended warranty and then when he brought the paperwork for the car I noticed that price had gone up a lot. I threatened to cancel the whole deal and the guy agreed to change it so I was getting the car for the verbally agreed upon price.the car dealer told me that a running board for the car was optional and he insisted I had to get it third party located at their dealership even though the manufacturer lists it as an option in their brochures.the one dealer kept insisting I had to pay extra for floor matts. I kept telling them I didn’t want them and they needed to take the price of them off the car. They finally agreed. As I was leaving after buying the car from them, a guy came and threw the matts into the car so I ended up getting them for free.the guy told me the price of the car would double tomorrow if I didn’t buy it today. The guy told my girlfriend, who didn’t have a license yet, that he would drive her to work every day until she got hers if only she wold buy the car today. The guy told me I was too young to buy a car despite my being in my 20s.the guy laughed when I asked him about a feature I read about in the brochure for the car, he insisted I had made it up.After much negotiating, the guy agreed to sell my uncle a car for a certain price. My uncle went home to get his checkbook and came back 20 minutes later ready to buy the car, they then told him the price was too low and they couldn’t sell the car for that price. My uncle left and bought a car elsewhere.the guy told me I was wasting his time going on test drives in cars and that if I wanted to do more test drives, I would have to agree to buy a car by the end of that day in which case he would let me go on as many test drives as I wanted.the car dealership decided I was wasting their time so they set me up with a secretary at the dealership who knew nothing about cars and couldn’t answer any of my questions
