When the Pentagon ended W&L’s ROTC program in the mid-1990s, the university was offered a “cross-town agreement” with the Army ROTC program at VMI. W&L students — yes, those admitted to W&L, taking their academic coursework at W&L, pursuing W&L degrees — may take the military science coursework at VMI, receiving VMI grades, and transfer the 12 credits back to their degree program at W&L. The W&L students are eligible for scholarships, stipends, and leadership roles within the ROTC command at VMI, as equal participants in all aspects of coursework, field exercises, and physical training. And upon successful completion, they are commissioned, typically in Lee Chapel on the afternoon after graduation.
