PDF Editor FAQ

What is the reasoning behind voting Democratic? Why do so many people support the core ideas and philosophies of the Democrats and continue to vote for them when they seem fundamentally ineffective and inefficient?

Preface: I write this as a "bleeding heart liberal." I also write this as a woman, a child of two immigrant parents, a person of color, and a sexual health educator. If we only look at the candidates in the GOP for the 2016 presidential race, at the very least, it's pretty obvious why people might not want to vote republican. The current candidates have done a lot of pandering to their extreme right base at the expense of their more moderate supporters. This pandering includes a lot of racist, xenophobic, and homosexist drivel that tends to make the average person feel pretty icky inside. Trump is the obvious example in this case, but in my book, Huckabee runs a close second, particularly with his tweet during the democratic debate that said "I trust Bernie Sanders with my tax dollars as much as I trust a North Korean chef with my black lab." You know, because all Asians are barbarians that eat dogs. While these two are pretty blatant, the other GOP candidates are still espousing the same views, just in a slightly more subtle way. Personally, I would rather not vote for a person who has so little tact and lacks cultural awareness. I would also rather not vote for someone who insults my culture. The only person I might consider voting for in that whole slew of people is Fiorina, though I'm not a huge fan of her Planned Parenthood drivel either. But still, not voting GOP doesn't necessarily mean that I'd vote democratic. I'll try to keep my remarks brief, because otherwise you'll never hear the end of it.First, let's talk about "welfare." As far as "welfare" goes, there's no such official program called "welfare." There are however, a series of programs that help people bridge the gap between a necessary service and an inability to pay for the service. So some "welfare" programs you've probably heard of are social security, which is more or less a stipend for people over a certain age, because it's assumed at that age they're no longer working. And it's also assumed that when said people were younger, they worked and part of their paycheck contributed to social security. Of course the system isn't perfect, and some people do take advantage of it. But generally, it's good policy to take care of people who contributed to the workforce once they're no longer working. Along those lines, another "welfare" program you've probably heard of is Medicare, which provides affordable medical care for people over the age of 65, because as people age, they tend to manifest different health problems, and being sick is expensive. (For the purpose of this little bit, let's just ignore the fact that America has one of the most ludicrous health care systems in the world in terms of cost vs. value of actual service.) So once again, you have people who have previously paid into this system now having access to it once they're of the age to not work anymore. Now we get to the more "controversial" parts of welfare. One of these programs you might've heard of is called Medicaid, which helps provide health care for people who can't afford to buy health insurance, either through the exchanges set up by the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) or through an employer. Health insurance is a very complicated product, and there are people who devote their entire careers to explaining what it is, but for all intents and purposes, it's the ability to pay for medical bills when someone gets sick. If you've ever been sick and tried to go to work or go to school, you'll know that it's miserable. You probably don't do very good work and it takes you longer to heal, so it's a lose-lose situation for everyone. Now imagine trying to support a family when you're perpetually sick because you can't take time off from work to go to the doctor, and even if you could, going to the doctor would bring more bills that divert money that could go to other, more useful places. That's a crappy situation all around, and that's why Medicaid provides the ability to pay for healthcare services to people who can't afford to pay normally. Briefly, I'll mention two other "welfare" programs you've probably heard of, which is the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) aka "food stamps," and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), both of which serve to help people and families under the poverty line. At this point, something you might ask is, "Why should we bother to feed people who can't pay for their food?" Or, "Why should we have to pay for other people's health care when they get sick? That's not fair to me!" And herein lies the great debate between democrats and republicans on welfare programs. For the most part, democrats believe that there should be some form of safety net for the American citizens to fall back on in case of hard times, whereas republicans are much more inclined to tell people to "work hard, and good things will happen." However, in the real world, unforseen circumstances do arise, and sometimes when life throws a curveball your way, it's nice to have that safety net, and the way the republicans view it, there's not much room for negotiation or nuance. So they fall back on the age old adage, "People are just lazy, and if they worked harder, things would be ok." Personally, I have no issue with money being taken out of my 3 paychecks to care for other people, because to me, it makes sense to take care of American citizens. Alternatively, you could think about it in the way that if suddenly your parents decided to cut you off and make you pay for everything, I'd imagine that you'd need help in the beginning while you got your bearings, and different welfare programs would help you do that. I think it's also worth noting that compared to many other developed nations, our welfare system is both really stringent and miserly. So in that respect, I side more democratic than republican. Life happens, and I'm not about punishing people for getting knocked down.Ok, that's enough about welfare. Now let's talk about war. You specifically mentioned Obama cutting down on military spending. If you just do a quick google search on "military spending by country," you'll find that the US spends the most money on it's military as compared to any other country in the world. In fact, it spends even more than the next 10 largest military spending countries combined (American Military Dominance In One Staggering Chart). Here's the thing. A lot of that spending goes towards funding the current conflicts we're involved in in the Middle East, and taking care of the veterans once they come back from combat. (Don't even get me started on how both parties pretty much screw over veterans in general.) The combined price of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars so far? Anywhere from 4-6 trillion dollars. (The Total Iraq and Afghanistan Pricetag: Over $4 Trillion). Both democrats and republicans were falsely lead to believe that war in Iraq was the key to flushing out weapons of mass destruction and getting rid of terrorists (in very simplistic terms). At the end of the Clinton administration, there was a 236 billion dollar surplus. But in 200,4 shortly after the US invaded Iraq, there was a 412 billion dollar deficit. A fair bit of the surplus went into funding the Iraq war, which has now been deemed unnecessary and a tactical blunder. Hindsight's 20/20 and all. So long story short, I'm in favor of bringing our troops home and putting an end to these costly wars, because even though Iraq is technically over, Iran is still happening, and now there's the matter of Syria as well. War is expensive, and republicans seem to be a little more heavyhanded with the war hammer than the democrats do. (Though that's a large argument with Clinton among the democratic base, that she's too eager to use war before exercising other, less costly, less deadly options.) I'm ok with my tax dollars helping out a struggling family, I'm not as ok with my tax dollars being used to kill people overseas. But hey, I don't really get a say as to where my tax dollars go.I'll briefly discuss the fact that I'm a neuroscientist, and I'm a firm believer in the scientific process. And the fact that the GOP is denying climate change for whatever reason, despite widespread consensus from the scientific community that climate change is real and it's a very real problem for us, really annoys me, seeing as the vast majority of the GOP is going to be dead in the ground while I'm still on this planet dealing with the fact that Florida is practically underwater due to a rising sea level, and we as humans are slowly making our own home inhospitable to our own species and we're not doing anything about it, even though there are definitely steps we can take to mitigate the heating process. I haven't seen as many democrats deny climate change, so once again, I'm more in agreement with the democrats. (Sorry, got a little facetious with this section.)And finally, there's the matter of social issues. That's issues like equal pay, same-sex marriage, abortion, etc. Generally, I just feel that the GOP is out of touch in terms of social issues, for example, when they struck down an equal pay bill that was going through congress last year. Same-sex marriage has already been decided as constitutional by SCOTUS, and there are GOPers still griping about it. Also the fact that they want to deny a fundamental right to people is ridiculous (Loving v. Virginia decided that marriage was a fundamental right regardless of skin color). Finally, as I woman, I believe that I should have the ultimate decision over what happens to my body, and the fact that some person who's never met me wants to tell me that I have to put my life on hold for almost 19 years if I have an unplanned pregnancy, occasionally even in the case of rape or incest, really grinds my gears, as I don't like when people who have no stake in my life make life-altering decisions for me. The democrats have had a much better track record with social issues in my book, which is just a bonus, as right now I'm mostly concerned about economic policy, which I didn't discuss here, but if I were to summarize that very briefly, the republicans are still insisting on trickle down economics which have previously been shown not to work in terms of growing the economy (their philosophy is people who make more money should keep more money, which is fine, but the tax code is written so full of loopholes so the ultra-rich are basically paying no taxes on the money they're making, or they're storing it in non-taxable overseas bank accounts), whereas democrats are more interested in raising taxes on the ultra-rich to give tax cuts to middle-class folk.EDIT: I forgot to briefly discuss the minimum wage, and why $15/hour is a decent idea. When the minimum wage was established in in 1938, it was established as a living wage. That means that if someone worked full time on minimum wage, they would be able to provide for their family. It wasn't a lavish lifestyle, but at the very least the family had a roof over their heads and food on the table. Now it's 2015, and inflation is a very real thing. Prices of goods have gone up considerably since 1938, and it costs a lot more to live now than it did back then. So if you've got prices for necessities of life going up at a much higher rate than what the minimum wage is, you run into a problem. Someone working full time can no longer provide for their family. In fact, in no state can you rent a one bedroom apartment on 40 hours a week getting paid minimum wage (How many hours you'd have to work earning minimum wage to rent an apartment in every state). And that hasn't even added in the costs of food, transportation, and basically anything else that you'd need to get by on a day to day basis. Raising the minimum wage to be a living wage again would help people provide for their families, and be less dependent on welfare programs because they wouldn't actually be below the poverty line anymore. But once again, republicans are insistent that if you just work hard (2-3 jobs, whatever), then you can do it. Consider that. You'd be working anywhere from 80-120+ hours a week to provide for yourself and your family, at the expense of spending time with your family, and probably your physical health since you're working so much. And as we discussed previously, you can't really work well when you're sick. See the issues with not having a livable minimum wage here?Anyways, hopefully I've answered your question. If you have more questions, the google is always a great place to go to learn about policy. I'm a huge fan of Vox (Understand the News) which gives you flashcards to help you learn about the history and controversy over any one of the issues I've discussed, plus a bunch more that I didn't even touch on. Generally, I believe in reading to become an engaged citizen, but I totally get that sometimes it's hard to stay informed because sometimes life gets in the way. I'd recommend just reading for 10 minutes a day when you're on the bus or on the way to school. You'll be amazed by how much you learn. Cheers!

Are there any physicists that are interested in working with someone who is in contact with aliens, who are trying to explain advanced propulsion systems?

NO!Restatement of QuestionA contactee is receiving channelled information of a technical nature.Counter QuestionWhy does the source of the information need to have the assistance of any terrestrial human scientist? Most would conclude right off the bat, reading this question that it was OBVIOUS that the contactee is seeking to abuse the credibility of any physicist foolish enough to ‘help’ the contactee to give credence to their message.Any real message wouldn’t need this. So, its sort of self-invalidating to say the contactee needs to work with a professional physicist. Why? Any such message rises or falls on its own.Think about it this wayImagine some alien sociologist went to the trouble to convert a 1956 Flying Saucer Service Manual to impeccable English to help out over-populated and diseased Earth. Let’s accept that. That alien sociologist would work with specialists on their planet and wouldn’t need to speak with any of those primitive monkey scientists to help them explain anything. They would make everything ELEMENTARY for anyone getting the message. Now to quote Richard Feynman on this subject, Elementary doesn’t mean easy to understand. Elementary means very little is required to know ahead of time in order to understand a subject, except to have an infinite amount of intelligence! haha..There may be a large number of steps that are very hard to follow but each step doesn’t require any knowledge of calculus or knowing Fourier Transforms and so on.Physicists are interested in PhysicsThe next barrier you have in dealing with physicists is that any scientist worth their salt demands real evidence they can understand in order to start a properly defended analysis. Physicists understand physics. Chemists understand chemistry. Biologists understand biology. Mathematicians understand math. Engineers understand engineering. All scientists have an appreciation and respect for other fields, but they also know their limits. For the physicist any channeled information is not credible full-stop. That’s a barrier that is insurmountable to any serious physicist because there is no physical mechanism that any physicist is aware of that allows such information to be transmitted from one mind to another. So, no physicist would be interested in reviewing such channeled material no matter how well structured. Serious and capable and busy scientists won’t waste their time on such obviously flawed information or associate their name with such obviously flawed data. They would worry that any interaction would be portrayed in the media as an endorsement of something that isn’t true, which is a death knell for anyone’s career in science.Channeled Information Exists as an Idea (So does the idea of Santa Claus)Yet from time to time there are serious scientists who are interested. Looking at them as a group is instructive. All scientists would agree that channeling and UFOs along with ghosts and demons, angels and Santa Claus even, are properly studied by psychologists sociologists anthropologists and historians. All these things exist within the human imagination. The products of human imagination is the proper field of study in all those fields mentioned. Some notable scientists who have taken the question of UFO, after life experiences, channelled information seriously are largely at this point in time historians, psychologists and anthropologists.Scientists who are interested in Contactee StoriesHere are a few notable ones; What can a Contactee do with Channelled Information? Here is a program that would work for any real contactee who wanted to create a group of human experts to assist them in creating a fleet of UFOs. But you don’t go running after them and burden them with your madcap messages. You have to understand more about the human psyche. I am merely pointing out this type of scientist is your point of entry WHEN YOU ARE READY TO COME CLEAN ABOUT YOUR CHANNELING not before.Flying Saucer Supply ChainAny advanced technology starship will be complex. Compare the complexity of a dug out canoe with that of an Apollo spacecraft. The canoe takes skill and care to execute properly and building a good one should not be under rated. However, when one looks at a functional diagram of an Apollo spacecraft one can see that this is a highly complex device compared to the canoe. The Apollo consisting of 2 million separate parts requiring 100,000s of craftspeople and tens of billions of dollars of effort. Each part and piece had its own supply chain, its own expertise in properly making it, its own theory of operation, mechanism of action, physical principle and a whole host of specialist information to execute properly. For example, spacesuit comfort required the expertise of manufacturers of push up bras to solve specific problems in spacesuit safety reliability and comfort. Particularly chafing under the arms under pressure. Those solutions made better bras! So, any real contactee that was receiving this volume of information would be capable of pulling just one piece out of the data stream that was truly revolutionary for human culture and focus first on that. After all, who is the contactee in contact with? Some sort of alien anthropologist visiting psychically somehow the natives of a primitive planet that needs a helping hand to survive. Okay. So, somehow they know a helluva lot about us.See the problem? If they don’t know a damn thing about us then how do they know they’re helping? If they don’t know a damn thing about us, because they’re too alien or whatever, then they’re running a HUGE moral hazard telling us anything.Do you give a monkey a gun? As they asked in a famous X-File episode. No!The outcome would be too damned predictable. So, according to the question you asked, here the aliens are giving the contactee a boat load of information for something that is so far beyond our primitive culture that the Apollo spaceship looks like a damn dug out canoe by comparison. Canoe and Shorts, Spaceship and space suit, Starship and Starwear..So the alien is giving the contactee this information that means they know a helluva lot about humans and human culture and all the rest. So, that means the contactee can ask the aliens to help in this program. Now why you have to ask ME is another invalidation of the contactee claim for this reason. The aliens should already know if they’ve gotten this far. haha -The aliens should already have worked this out. Just saying. So why am I yammering on about this? Because I figure the person asking the question wants to write a story or screenplay and wants to get it right. Alright.. haha - I’ll play along.By the way David Bowie played in a movie and Broadway play “The Man Who Fell to Earth” which resulted in the Album Ziggy Stardust, which resulted in the song Starman which was played during the launch of the first Falcon Heavy. All based on a 1963 novel. Here a humanoid alien Thomas Jerome Newton came from a distant planet that needed something common on Earth but rare on his home world. That is water. This is why he is here. It has nothing to do with us. In this case its water. Now he doesn’t have the resources on his planet to build big fleets of spaceships required, but does have a plan, given the status of human technology. Patent a bunch of ideas that and license them to various companies and then use the profits to build a fleet of starship drones that take all the water off Earth. So this suggests a plan of action for the contactee who is sort of in the same position of Newton. Excepting we hope the aliens aren’t in it for the water, or to serve us as an entre for Sunday dinner. So recall that the contactee is getting a helluva lot of information downloaded to them and they do not have the skills to make it happen so they need to organise the resources necessary to make use of the information to take some meaningful action. Right. Here’s how you do that.Become aware of simple open questions in physics or technology that solving the problem would provide immediate fame and fortune.A good example of this sort of thing is the experience of Fert and Grunsberg following their discovery of Giant Magnetoresistance in 1988. This resulted in a simple solid state device that was a very sensitive sensor for magnetic fields at a very small scale. This is used for MEMS based servos and actuators, hard disk drives, magnetic RAM, biosensors. A whole host of things. By 1993 their schools licensed billions of dollars worth of applications and by 2007 the two shared a Nobel Prize in physics. These two are renowned scientists. So, this is what you need to do. Get your alien anthropologist to give you ONE LITTLE THING that is REVOLUITIONARY and has IMMEDIATE BENEFIT, and is IMMEDIATELY ACTIONABLE. A simple description of the physic any child could understand a simple way to make it, an immediate and GENIUS outcome that has HUGE FINANCIAL BENEFIT. It doesn’t have to solve a major problem, it just has to solve a simple problem in a genius way.Once you’ve got Little Idea done well worked out in detail you look around for ‘hands’ to help you make a prototype. You build it, you explain it clearly, and you DEMONSTRATE IT. The benefit is immediately understood by all specialists in the field. You won’t be asking for anyone to take your channelling claims seriously. The experts in the field will be asking you to give lectures about the innovation they think you created. The aliens won’t care if you take credit. You LICENSE THE IDEA to MAJOR buyers in the field. You make LOTS OF MONEY. People respect people with money. They are suspicious of people without money. People especially respect people who make other people more money than they make. So, you want to make a lot of money. Bigger than Bill Gates or Elon Musk would be preferable.Rinse and repeat - do the same thing with another idea. Any one hit wonder will be dismissed when things get weird. You will need a half dozen ground breaking revolutionary ideas across a broad spectrum of skills - in part because of what you need to build your fleet of UFOs. In part because of what you need to reveal to disbelieving physicists and engineers. A one hit wonder will be dismissed. A half dozen or a dozen revolutionary ideas across a broad spectrum of study will ALREADY be mind boggling.Pick carefully those you trust with sensitive information and dish out information slowly. Use your money to profile individuals and analyse everything about them. Form a strong personal relationship with those whom are candidates for sharing sensitive information. Have 2 to 3 times more people than you will actually use. Reveal to those only after you have a strong personal relationship. Always be prepared to walk away if they fail any test, and move on to another of your cohort. Do not make this group too large. This is your core team. Reveal information slowly, test thoroughly at each step, be prepared to walk away and start another if they fail for any reason. Do not reveal too much to any one person. Be prepared to intimidate, blackmail, ruin or even kill those who have mission critical information and pose an existential threat to your program. Don’t put them in that position in the first place.Have a clear order of battle in how you reveal information to each member in the context of the previous prohibitionsIdentify Sociologist, Historian, Psychologist, who already studies alien related phenomenon.Ask the aliens to provide an elementary description that is immediately accessible to humans how channelling works. Work it out in its entirety.Ask the aliens to explain why you and no one else in a way that is immediately obvious to anyone. Work it out in its entirety. Connect it to (b) above.Build a personal relationship with a group of people who qualify as your first human contact you might reveal some truth to.Once you’ve made your selection tell the one you’ve selected that you are working on a project where their expertise might be helpful. Would they be open to signing a NDA/NCA and taking a 3 month stipend to review prior to making a fuller longer term (and more lucrative) commitment?Sign and NDA/NCA Secrecy Agreement. Have serious looking attorneys and others explain the seriousness of this.Pay them handsomely.Make them wait a few days wondering what’s up? Then have your security people contact them and arrange a block of time to meet with you at a remote lab.Have your security detail pick them up and fly them by private jet to your remote lab.Take them on a tour of the lab. Discuss the history of your company and all the things you’ve done. Stress how you personally provided innovations in a broad range of fields that prior to you no one person had mastered. Just as its unusual to find someone who knows many languages, its unusual to find someone who is expert at so many fields. When they ask what you paid them to review? What is this all about? If they never ask the question they fail the test and you send them home after thanking them profusely. If they do ask they pass the test.Explain to them that you have a new idea they are specialist in since they have direct information and you do not. What is that? the other asks. Again if they do not ask, they fail the test and go home If they ask they pass the test.Explain to them step by step how psychic contact works between minds. Don’t say that is what you are explaining. Explain it step by step so that at some point THEY know what you are explaining. They should say something like MEMORIES, YOU’RE TALKING ABOUT MEMORIES - as Deckard said in Blade Runner. Again, if they say that they pass the test. If not you thank them and send them home. They might say contactees, you’re talking about contactees. That’s right you say. They need to understand without any prompting, that THEY HAVE UNIQUE EXPERIENCE IN CONTACTEES. Again the program is the same. You can see how you continually filter folks but do not reveal too much information. You also don’t say too much. If they make any wild claims you can always say well they may have imagined that but I certainly never said that. And you would be right - this method of managing the release of information is a science.Have a demonstration of what you described. For example, the audio spotlight projects two ultrasonic beams along a narrow path that beat against one another in the audio range. Its a sort of speaker that lets you focus sound in only a well defined region of space. Its a gimmick that lets you show off a specific sort of thing. So, wrt to the contactee phenomenon, you introduce the scientist to a specific device. You explain how it works. It will put into a persons mind a specific thing that is unique and undeniable. You don’t tell them that. You ask do you wish to see a demonstration? If yes they pass. If no - they fail. You demonstrate the device. The number three comes to their mind. They tell you. Again? another yes or now question. Make a big deal about swapping out a USB stick and uploading information and so on. Even if its easy. Ready? Yes or no. Any hesitation is a ail. Yes. A picture of an orange sitting on a walnut table appears. Again? The smell of freshly cut grass wafts into their consciousness. Can you think of any way you can help with this project? Again they have thoughts or they do not. Those that do not get a big thank you - if you can think of anything let me know. Those who do have ideas - get a passing mark. They have a specific range of things for them to look out already worked out relating to how they can contribute to your contactee technology. You challenge them at each step. Again these are all tests. The thing is this device isn’t really the goal. It’s merely the pretext to build a personal relationship and get a sense of them as a workmate in the future if they get to the point where you can trust them enough to know the truth about your contactee statusYou work on the hardware demonstrated and get to know the person and they’ve passed every test with flying colours. They’ve gotten quite famous and rich from you and regard your relationship very highlyYou in the meantime roll out another whole host of ground breaking ideas over time.At some point they ask you about where you get your ideas? THEY mention maybe as a joke, that they think the only way anyone could ever come up with such genius things is if YOU were in contact with aliens somehow. That’s when you make a big fuss and FIRE THEM!When THEY CALL YOU BACK and want a meeting you give it to themYou have the meeting at a remote location with security around. You tell them you ARE in contact you will take them back and that’s when they enter the inner circle. You explain the program to them in the same sort of structured back and forth. The goal here is for THEM to bring other physicists and chemists into the program for the real purpose. Those are chosen from ones you have already worked with for years and have a strong personal relationship with anyway. You let others select them. Others inform them. You isolate the candidate. Deny everything. Challenge them. Test them. Then at the right point - accept them. This is how you convince competent physicists and chemists and engineers to work diligently for you and your program going forward.
