Lou Bloom from 2014’s Nightcrawler. (Spoilers ahead)Lou is polite, kind, a determined worker, and a complete sociopath. During the events of the film, Lou discovers the world of stringers, who are individuals that go out and get violent and brutal footage for television news networks to air during their morning show. After stealing a bike and pawning it for a video camera and police scanner, Lou tapes his first footage of a carjacking, which he then sells to Channel 6 news.The network head, Nina, asks for footage that involves families, typically well-off, being assaulted or attacked by minorities or impoverished individuals, which by the halfway point of the film, Lou finds the perfect footage of. He stumbles on an active crime scene, captures the two suspects’ faces on tape, breaks in to the home, and tapes the recently deceased bodies of a family with a missing infant. Despite breaking multiple laws, Lou doctors the footage so as to cover up the fact that he saw the assailants, thus preventing the police from pressing any sort of charges against him. He sells the footage for $15,000 after verbally demeaning and assaulting Nina, which Channel 6 doctors to prevent legal action, and the story becomes a fearmongering piece named ‘Horror House”. Then Lou tracks down the two suspects using his footage and sets up a perfect scenario for footage, wherein he plans to have the two suspects go into a populated area, where he will then call the police who will instigate a shootout. Things don’t go exactly as planned, and one of the suspects tries to escape in a car chase, which results in a huge accident. In one final act of villainy, Lou baits his employee, a young man named Rick, into getting shot by the suspect, who is then gunned down seconds later.He records all of this, edits it to his satisfaction, sells it to the news, and gets off with no repercussions from the police. By the end of the film, Lou has a thriving stringer business with multiple employees and vans and is respected by the station and Nina.Lou Bloom is a murderer, thief, and a sociopath, and the world of Nightcrawler encourages that. He succeeds because he is a villain.

I had a friend in prison named John. Big John. He was my workout partner.John looked like Thor. He was 6′6″, and weighed around 300 lbs. I'm not small myself, at 5′8″ and 225, and I'm strong, real strong, but not like John. I once saw John snatch a 170 lb man off the ground with one hand and throw him half a dozen feet.John could deadlift nearly 800 lbs and easily shoulder press 315 lbs 10 times. Those of you that lift can understand the phenomenal strength in this non-steroid-using giant.John was also a very quiet and humble man. He enjoyed playing chess and writing poetry. Some of his stuff even got published. John was very courteous and respectful of everyone. John just wanted to go home. He was probably the best friend I ever had in prison.Big John had earned his way into an honor unit: he was doing easy time winding it down. One day, he got a new celly, a real piece of work, classic bully type. He somehow had got himself moved into privileged housing. Almost immediately, this idiot starts fucking with John. Then he finds John’s button: women. John was very old-fashioned when it came to women and respect. This guy starts bragging about beating up his ol'lady, or “putting her in check,” as he called it. Three times my friend John asked to be moved. He never raised his voice and he did not beg. He was told to just deal with it. Nobody ever told me what that piece of shit said to my friend, but it must have been bad. When the cell doors rolled, John approached the officer station, quietly waited in line for his turn, and then informed the young female officer that “my celly and I got into it, ma'am, and he did not make it.” She replied, “what?” John said, “You don't want to go in there, ma'am,” but she did. I think she quit her job. They say that Mr. Tough Guy’s neck was smaller around than an average man's wrist. I was informed of this by an officer who had tears in his eyes. Everybody liked John. Through this whole story, I have referred to Big John in the past tense, because he asked me to bury his memory and never write to him again.Big John was given a mandatory 50-year minimum, then transferred to another state and placed in solitary to do his 50 years alone, literally buried alive.Big John and me. I'm 27 and he is 23. The photo does him no justice; he is actually standings couple feet further from the camera than I. I made him stand back so I would not look so small next to him. He is actually at his lightest here — 285 lbs. In seg, an inmate disrespected a female guard, saying some foul thing. This man kicked his steel segregation door off its tracks, walked down, and told Mr. Foul Mouth that next time he would be coming in, and that he should apologize to her. He never raised his voice. The apologies were given.
