What is it like to study biology at Washington University in St. Louis?

Thanks for the A2A.I'm not actually a biology major, but I've taken all of the pre-med required courses and a good number of classes taught through the biology department. A lot of people finish coursework in pre-health requirements and go on to complete a biology major -- it's definitely popular among the pre-health crowd, just because it is relatively easy to obtain after finishing those classes. If you're thinking about going down a pre-health track at WashU, I would say that it is certainly difficult, but also manageable. Even through the large lecture classes, it is certainly possible to get a 3.8+ GPA if you're willing to put in the work and effort required in doing so. At times there definitely can be a culture of negativity when it comes to the large science classes (Chem 111/112, Bio 2960/2970, etc.), especially near the dates of exams. However, the difficulty of classes here shouldn't discourage you from applying and possibly attending a place like WashU -- I can say from experience that working hard in these classes pays off in the form of better fundamental understanding the in sciences, a higher MCAT score, etc. In general, people are collaborative, rather than competitive, in these classes, and there are numerous forms of help if you need it.In terms of the courses themselves, WashU has some really interesting electives in the biology department, including some that are cross-listed with physics and anthropology, such as "Physics of the Heart" and "Anthropological Genetics". Both are really good courses when it comes to integrating what you've learned through hard science classes and applying it to a general system. There are also three tracks (listed on the biology department website) within the department -- including a neuroscience track that involves some interesting laboratory classes as well.

How have you bounced back from a bad grade, either failure in a class or nearly failing a course?

In undergrad, I was a Comparative Literature major. If you don’t know what that is, it’s basically an English degree with a foreign language requirement. I’d originally started as pre-med, but it was pretty obvious after one semester that it was a poor fit, and I dropped it.But because the course requirements for pre-med are prescribed (no pun intended) I already had a list of science courses I should take. I decided to use them to fill some of my general education requirements. I stuck with Biology 100 and 101 in my freshman year. And in the first semester of my sophomore year, I took Chemistry 111.It was awful. I couldn’t keep up, no matter how much I paid attention in class or read in the textbook. It all went over my head. I failed every assignment and every test. The only reason I did passably well in the labs was because the TA who ran it was a member of the student library where I worked, and she helped me understand the practical side of it. But the whole experience was utterly demeaning. It’s not that I wasn’t smart, I just didn’t have the brain for chemistry. Turns out I made the right call in dropping pre-med.Finally, the week before final exams, the professor was walking through the class and telling everyone what they needed on the final to pass the class. After my so-so performance in the labs and getting graded on a curve (nobody was doing well, it turned out) he said, “Taber, you need a 55 to pass.”And I laughed. I laughed out loud, right in front of him.He looked at me and asked, “What’s so funny?”I said, “I haven’t gotten a grade that high in this class all semester.”So he told me to visit him during his office hours. When I did, he said, “I went over your transcript, and I have just one question: why the hell is a comparative literature major taking a chemistry course intended for chemistry majors?”Turns out, Chem 111 was an intro course… for students who were already chemistry majors. It was more rigorous, covered more ground, and assumed you were taking additional courses besides it. The only reason I hadn’t been blocked from enrolling in the first place was because the computer system still thought I was pre-med, even though I had withdrawn the previous year. After we talked a bit, the professor gave me an offer: I had to show up for the final and do my best to get a 55. I had to study, do the reading, but as long as I made a good-faith effort to pass—and he would know if I didn’t—he’d make sure I finished the course with a D+.There were two key effects from this. First, a D+ counted as a passing grade for my general education requirement. It would hurt my GPA, but I’d get what I needed.Second, it would block me from ever taking another chemistry course at that university again. Not unless I retook the class and got a better grade. We shook on it. I studied, took the test, and got my D+.

What was your NEET preparation story?

Before 10th boards, I wanted to be a dancer & choreographer (I am a bharatnatyam graduate). After 10th, I found myself in Allen (integrated course). Lol.The initial days were a struggle We were the first batch in Govandi, so we didn't even have any senior guidance. I had never joined a coaching institute before this. In fact, the only time I took tuitions were in my 10th std. In school, things were so different….who paid attention in the classes? I used to stare at the board & start choreographing some steps in my mind on any random song. Nevertheless, I was a good student in the eyes of my teachers as I used to score well & my behaviour was proper ( who baat alag hai ki friends ke saath alag rehti thi :) ).So, concentrating in the initial days of 11th std was tough for me as habits die hard. We had our minor tests every 3 weeks. In my first minor, I scored 431. The highest was 630 @ that time. I knew I didn't perform well. Somehow, I got selected for the SRG. Now, I attended two classes of the SRG batch & I told myself I can not manage this, my base has to be strong for NEET, which wasn't happening. So I left those classes and attended only the regular lectures.Physics wasn't going well for me. We were given quite a lot ‘above NEET level' questions. And I used to always be like ‘yaar iska yeh formula kyu? Yeh waala kyu nahi?’ It frustrated me & once I even ended up crying over the topic- friction. Our sir had great knowledge but he had taught only IIT batch & this was the 1st medical batch given to him. Neverthless, he tried his best…i know that.We never read NCERT and my average score was 60 , highest being 111.Chemistry had been my fav since 9th but I faced a lot of problems here too. Be it the new concepts, be it us not understanding inorganic at all, we had a hell lot of problems here. My avg score- 90 & highest - 130.Bio lectures were going good. Sirs were friendly & it was the only sub which used to save me. I used to be in the 250–290 range only. But again, I never read NCERT: ( …..only modules. My study time used to be around only 4–5 hrs daily. I maintained my position in top 10 in Mumbai but could never achieve top 5. Amongst all the struggles, prayer used to calm me, my father would enlighten me & my Chem sir would keep the competitive spirit on.Now, I never focused on my boards & when the 11th annuals were approaching, I knew I had to study a lot of portion. So, I kept aside all my coaching modules & began learning boards textbooks. And I literally kept studying for almost the whole day. It was then that I realized, I can study this much for my entrance too & that was the turning point in my life. ( BTW I scored 87% in 11th).I started reading 12th std bio NCERT in the hols. I remember solving SHM from Allen modules (as that was the last chapter taught to us, waves was still remaining). Eventually, I was the only person who used to go for doubts even in the vacations. And my study hours increased to 15–17 per day (9 hrs when we had classes). When 12th began, I was excited. In the first minor, I came 5th. And then maintained the second position in the next three minors. The biggest change that happened was that our physics sir got changed and this person, who taught us in 12th was not only a teacher, for me, he was my guide, my inspiration. Physics and Chem became my strength (never scored below 120 in Chem, highest being 165 & rarely went below 110 in physics,highest- 161). My bio sucked a bit, or maybe a lot ( avg-250 , highest-336).The one mistake that I did was I started realising the importance of NCERT only towards the end ( and you may be knowing the imp of it in bio and inorganic). So, in the last two months only, did I read NCERT.NEET was my first national level exam that I gave, before that I never gave any RMO, KVPY, IBO, JEE MAINS or anything. The pressure was different over there and I messed up a lil.But But But, @ the end I secured 560, phy-125, chem-138, bio-297 with an AIR 5761 ( messed in bio ).In the 1st round, I have been alloyed LTMMC which comes under the top 20 colleges in India.I learnt a lot in these two years and I don't know how these experiences are gonna be helpful in the future but I cherish all the memories.N btw , now I have joined Phoenix dance studio & I am learning more of dance in this gap.Thank you!!
