PDF Editor FAQ

Are the rights of ordinary citizens who register domain names being exploited by registries, registrars, and the $100 billion plus corporate domain industry?

No.

I am curious to know that in a country, where Ambanis and Tatas are household names, are there businessmen that are doing great work but not many people know about them? Who are some of the successful but not well-known Indian businessmen?

From Bootstrapping To $300M In Value, Bhavin M Turakhia, CEO - Directi | Unknown Internet Entrepreneurs, who turned millionairesLate last month, when Nasdaq-listed Endurance International Group announced the acquisition of the web business of Directi, it made Bhavin Turakhia, 34, and brother Divyank, 32, richer by over $100 million (about Rs 620 crore). For entrepreneurs so young and so successful— the brothers started Directi when they were still in their teens and yet to graduate—the Turakhia brothers have surprisingly stayed far away from the spotlight."They are the most successful unknown Internet entrepreneurs out of India," says Anupam Mittal of People Group, which runs Internet properties like The No.1 Site for Matrimony, Matrimonials, Shadi and Marriage, Real Estate, Property, India Properties, Buy-Sell-Rent Property: Makaan.com and Social Networking - Indian Dating - India Friendship - Fropper.com. One reason for their low profile is their business did not have any external investors and was bootstrapped, adds Avinash Raghava, fellow, iSPIRT Foundation, and a former Nasscom executive. Both Mittal and Raghava have known the Turakhia brothers professionally for over a decade now.The brothers attracted big clients even when they were in college. Nasscom was organising a cybercity event in Delhi in 1999. The Internet was still very new and not many knew how to set up leased lines for connectivity. So, the country's apex software industry organisation approached the two college kids, who were savvy about all things internet, to help get the leased lines set up.Directi had recorded Rs 7 lakh as revenues in its first year of operation and the brothers had repaid the Rs 50,000 they had borrowed from their father to start the business.Fifteen years later, he still sounds boyish and enthusiastic, but you can no longer mistake him for a college kid because the boyishness is tinged with an air of affluence. And while the enthusiasm for technology is still strong, his responses are more guarded. The brothers declined to disclosed revenues, but according to some reports, the figure for Directi, as a group, including the businesses the brothers still own, is in the region of $300 million. Both brothers spend most of their waking hours at work, which they say they is more fun than anything else. They had two Toyota Innovas customised to fit in a work desk and connectivity to ensure they can work even on the road. But they haven't allowed the intense pressure of building a business without any external capital to rob them of other interests in life. Divyank is a hobby pilot and owns a single-engine Cessna. It took him less than a fortnight to learn to fly; he got a trainer to teach him 12-13 hours every day. He also did a fiveday aerobatic proficiency training at the Sean Tucker School in California. He learnt to fly a copter last year, and flew New York to Los Angeles in 50 hours while making 23 stops. "I wanted to do it the fun way," he said.Reseller To RegistrarDirecti started by offering web-hosting services. Nasscom, People Group and Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy were some of its earliest customers. "Nearly every large site at that time was hosting with us," says Divyank, who recalls a political party, some banks and almost every dotcom company being customers in 1999-2000.Big companies came to Directi because it ensured uptime was higher and that the site wouldn't crash when they scaled up. Directi also started offering domain name registrations as a sub-registrar of Network Solutions, which had a monopoly at that time. When the monopoly ended, they were among the early ones to switch from being a reseller to being a registrar in 2001. This was their second breakthrough."They were both very hard core techies," says Raghava. "But between the two, Bhavin was more of the business-mind and Divyank more of the techie." Both choose to pursue a degree in commerce rather than engineering because it would free up more time for their Internet venture. When they were setting up the technology platform to run the registrar business, the brothers realised many others would do that too.So they productised it, allowing any registrar anywhere in the world to be able to use it to run their own business. That was beginning of two new businesses for the Turakhia brothers: one was a reseller business, Unlimited Reseller Hosting & Domain @ $1.49/mo, where they sold through re-sellers, and the other was Domain Registry & Registrar Solutions, which was registrars using their technology platform. "Our core competence was technology—not sales and marketing—and we leveraged that. And back then, we didn't have a lot of capital to do sales and marketing. So the idea was that the resellers or registrars sold to their local market and Directi helped them run their entire technology stack," says Divyank.Jaspreet SinghFounder & CEO DruvaDruva Software provides continuous data protection, data deduplication, and disaster recovery solutions. Druva offers two products: Druva inSync is fully automated laptop backup software, which protects corporate data for office and remote users, and Druva Phoenix is an enterprise class product for non-disruptive disk-to-disk backup for local and remote servers. How does domain name registry work?

When it comes to the world of domains and websites, there are 4 Rs you should remember.RegistryRegistrarResellerRegistrant1. Registry: A domain name registry, also known as a central registry is a company that maintains a database of all domain name registrations for a TLD (Top-Level Domain). A registry is also the company that stores the DNS and Whois records for the registered TLD.Verisign is one example of a registry, and it owns TLDs such as .COM, .NET, .TV, and .CC (among others).2. Registrar: A domain registrar is a company that has direct connection with the registry. Registrars work with registries to bring you the domain extensions.Dynadot is an example of a registrar, and we support the following TLDS: https://www.dynadot.com/domain/tlds.html3. Reseller: A domain reseller is a company or a person that buys domains on behalf of their customers. Resellers often tend to buy the domains from the registrar or other domain resellers through what is often called a domain market.Dynadot, while being a registrar, also acts as a reseller for those with Dynadot accounts (which are free to sign up for). Another example of a reseller is Sedo!4. Registrant: A domain registrant is the person who expresses interest in securing a solid domain name for their website. Registrants are the people who create a web presence and begin to garner necessary traffic; thereby bringing attention to not only their website, but their domain name as well.If you don’t fit into the category of being a registry, registrar, or reseller, then you (quite likely) are the perfect example of a registrant. If you have an interest in making your own extension, you would need to apply your idea with ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers). To get an in-depth knowledge of the process, I suggest taking a look at the following link (https://newgtlds.icann.org/en/applicants).Hope this helped! :)

One of the problems I have had with Mac, and remember I started with a Mac in 1983 was the constant change in technology making so much of my software redundant and then - along came CocoDoc who keep updating you're existing software to keep pace with all the machine operating system and supporting software developments. So I get to learn the basics of each system (and remember I have five 'CocoDoc' programs) and from there on I can keep using the same basic packages without having to start from the bottom again every time an update comes out - there are lots out there promising heaps but 'CocoDoc' actually deliver - will do me!
