I’ve had several experiences with “glitches.” In one “Neo and the cat” moment, I saw the same man walk by twice—both times in the same direction. In another one, both my son and I lost an entire day. In another, a member of a social group “switched” homes without it ever happening. In another, 9/11 did and didn’t happen.I’ll tell the story how my son and I lost a whole day.It was in January 2014, and my son was in middle school. The school had a very nice after-school program with all kinds of courses from learning how to code, to art projects, to Lego Club, etc.In late December, the school had mailed us a brochure with the courses for the new semester, which started in January, but my son hadn't picked any yet.In 2014, January 1 was a Wednesday (i.e., a holiday) and school started on Thursday, January 2, that week.So on Wednesday, January 1, I asked him which courses he wanted to take. I don't like being late on things, so I was itching to fill out the form, write the check, and enroll him in the classes as soon as possible.He picked three courses, one of which was origami with a favorite teacher of his, Mrs. L.I: "Are you sure this is something new, or is it just a rerun of the origami class you already took last semester?"Son: "I don't know. I'm going to ask Mrs. L."I: "But make sure you ask her right away, so we can get the enrollment in this week."The next day, he came home from school.Son: "So I asked Mrs. L., and it's not the same course. So I definitely want to take origami."So I filled out the form, wrote the check, put both in an envelope, and gave it to my son. He put the envelope in a binder in his backpack.The next day, he came home from school.I: "So did you give the envelope to the school office?"Son: "Argh! I totally forgot! I swear, swear, swear I'll do it tomorrow."I watched him take the envelope out of the binder and put it into a special pocket in his backpack so he wouldn't forget again.The next day, he came home from school.I: "So did you hand in the envelope today?"Son (beaming): "Yes! I told you I wouldn't forget it again."Then he looked at me and said, "But you know what's weird? I only had TWO days of school this week, but all the stuff I did took THREE days. Where did the third day go?"This was on Friday.We both went through it over and over, and he was right:- I asked him about the courses on Wednesday (holiday) and said he should ask Mrs. L. about the origami class- The next day (first day of school), he asked Mrs. L. and I filled out the form- The next day (second day of school), he had the envelope with him, but forgot to hand it in- The next day (third day of school), he finally handed it in.That's 3 days of school, but the only school days that week were Thursday and Friday!Where did the third day go?

I did my PhD at Cambridge University. I was enrolled in a PhD program at UIUC and took graduate courses at CMU.A PhD in computer science should generally be pursued in two cases:When you want to work in academia, e.g. in a tenure track position. It’s a nearly mandatory credential.When you want to work as a researcher, for example at an industry research lab such as Microsoft Research.Like any significant investment of time, energy, and money, make sure you understand what it gets you, as there is a high opportunity cost.Doing a PhD in computer science is interesting. It’s a chance to work with a lot of smart people in a pretty fun environment. As part of your doctoral research you become an expert in that area by reading the existing significant literature there, and collaborating with and learning from existing specialists. You also learn the skills for selecting research projects, writing the results in an appropriate fashion, and disseminating them in written and verbal form. A PhD is the best way to learn these skills, in my opinion.If you do a PhD in the US, it’s a lot of class work as well as research, and most of the people I know have taken 4–7 years to finish. In the UK it’s generally more tightly bounded - 3 years - with only research results required.A PhD is great if you want to become a specialist or need the credential. Otherwise you’re better off using the time in an area it will give you a better return.
