When I started college (I can’t tell you a year, as we hadn’t yet begun to measure time, but it was a bit after the Flood), my sister had email, so I searched around campus and found I could get a VAX/VMS account that I paid for by my usage. I think I ran through about $6 that year. I never had a computer with a modem while I was in college, so accessing the Internet was always at campus computer labs (or in a friend’s room).The next year, the campus rolled out free email for all students (and faculty and staff), and I learned of this software that gave you navigable access to massive stores of data around the same globally-spanning network that email used. This was, of course, Gopher, out of the University of Minnesota, and it was set to take the world by storm, because we all love navigating up and down folders. Because I was a diligent college student, I used it for research (by which I mean looking up song lyrics).Also that year, I first used FTP to copy files, mostly from ftp.wustl.edu, and this cool but annoying software, NCSA Mosaic, which let you “surf” the “world wide web” (the connection between surfing and webs still escapes me) if you could remember that “slashes” are “/” and not “\”, because Mosaic was not a sophisticated piece of software. My mother visited my and I showed her the site for Graceland (she’s a huge Elvis fan). Whatever, it was clear that Gopher would be the dominant Internet tool anyway, right?To pinpoint the time, this was a bit before a very famous search tool was officially launched by Stanford grad students. Those students, Jerry Yang and David Filo, launched Yahoo the next year, and it was still (at the time) an acronym for Yet Another Hierarchically Organized Oracle. You had to manually add sites and categorize them, and this seemed a perfectly reasonable way to build a web search tool. Yahoo, combined with Netscape Navigator, put Gopher into a box alongside Betamax, later to be joined by Zune.Don’t get me started on USENET. Let’s just say that it would have been reasonable for Wil Wheaton to conclude that most Internet users at the time hated him.
