PDF Editor FAQ

What, exactly, is the process of moving from high school to a PhD?

I’m not quite sure what you are asking (What, exactly, is the process of moving from high school to a PhD?), so I hope this answers! The following is roughly the path from secondary school to a PhD. Not everyone follows this path, and many fit other things in at various points along the way — having a family, working, time in military service, work for the Peace Corp, etc.Normally, one takes classes in high school. Studying for these classes, and doing well in most of them is important. If there are choices, then someone with a PhD in mind as an ultimate goal will try to take electives that further that goal: AP classes, advanced classes, etc.In high school, the student should also try to get involved in some things that will support future work or leisure goals — be that a club, a sports team, student government, etc. The goals of these extra items is to get some experience as well as have some fun outside of class.Normally, the student in junior year or early senior year will take an SAT or ACT exam (or both), and possibly some AP exams. The student will also have some idea of schools to which she/he will apply, and get some commitments of teachers/coaches/employers willing to write strong letters. The student applies, and gets accepted for an undergrad. Often, the student will be accepted at more than one college, and will need to decide which one is the “best fit.”As an undergrad, the student should be taking appropriate, challenging courses and doing well in them. The student should also be talking with other students, counselors, and faculty to understand what the field is about, how to build up a good record, and maybe how to get involved in some student activities (e.g., research, student newspaper, etc) that will help provide both experience and a better resume. The student may change major at least once, or add a second major, so these conversations and explorations may need to be done several times.During summers, the student may work in industry or government internships to gain additional experience. Or, the student may take additional classes to add a minor, a foreign language, or other skills.About the junior year, the student will begin researching graduate schools and programs. This will include talking to faculty, doing on-line research, and looking in recent journals and conference proceedings in the field of interest. The student will also probably take one or more GRE exams, and possibly other exams if needed (e.g., TOEFL).Fall of the senior year, the student will start applying to grad schools. This requires a good GPA, good test scores, and strong letters from references. Applications may also be made for scholarships and financial aid. Here, there is a split. Some fields and/or programs expect students to get the MS/MA degree first, and the student will apply to those programs, complete the degree, and then apply to PhD programs in a manner similar to the first set of applications. Other fields & programs either don’t care about the MS/MA or grant it as a component of the study towards the PhD.In general, in a PhD program, one takes a set of classes (or tests out via prior coursework or exams) that establish general mastery of material in the field. One also may take a set of courses that are more specialized in an area of research. Some programs have a requirement for a qualifying test or minimal GPA at this stage to ensure that students have a fundamental general background in the field.Somewhere in this process, the student will have contacted a professor and become attached as an advisee. The professor and student will have reached agreement on an area of research the student will conduct. The student will work on that area, possibly as part of a team, and may produce some artifacts (papers, devices, performances) to demonstrate competence. Once the student is to this point, the department/school sets up an in-depth exam that the student must pass to show that he/she is prepared and able to do research. This may involve a set of in-depth research projects on deadline, an intense oral exam, defending a thesis topic proposal, or all of those times.Once a student has passed this exam, the student has become a candidate. From here on, there generally is no need to take a course ever again. Instead, the candidate should be devoted to research — to becoming the world’s expert on a narrow topic. This means reading everything published about the topic by others, thinking deeply about the problem, and performing experiments to verify or refute items.During this whole process the candidate should also be learning about professional ethics & norms, how to write and referee professional papers, how to work with experimental subjects, and other topics that surround becoming a professional in the chosen field. The thesis topic is a claim — a particular form of hypothesis — about something grounded in current knowledge, but whose truth or falsity are unknown to anyone as of yet. Further, the thesis if proven (or sometimes, if disproved) will advance the knowledge in the field — usually by only a tiny amount. The goal of the candidate is to come up with a proof of some kind that definitively answers the thesis question to any informed individual — especially the student’s advisor and committee of faculty advisors. Then, the candidate writes up a document — a dissertation — that clearly states the thesis, provides detailed comparisons to previous work to show that it hasn’t been done before, describes a method of proof, shows the result of that proof, and documents that there are no other issues to resolve.Once the dissertation is near completion (or complete), it must be defended. Depending on the community and college, this usually involves a public presentation of results, and any person can ask questions and challenge the results. This may include faculty or experts from outside the university as a matter of course. The candidate may need to make some more experiments to clarify issues raised during this defense, and thereafter revise the dissertation based on committee feedback. One the defense is passed and the dissertation is accepted by the university (deposited), the candidate becomes eligible for the PhD. That usually requires making sure all fees are paid, library books returned, etc. Participation in the graduation ceremony is not usually required, but is a great capstone to the whole effort. The university will thereafter award the PhD.(I have a web page of resources for graduate students on parts of the process, if the reader cares about these things.)

What was the weirdest thing as a teacher you've caught a student doing?

It was a little over forty years ago when I began my teaching career in an upscale neighborhood in Orange County, California. I was assigned to teach second-grade.The exit door to my open-spaced classroom was fitted with a tall but narrow privacy window, approximately eight inches wide. This one-way window was useful not only in seeing students before swinging the door open but also enabled me to observe students lining-up after recess.Second-graders, not being particularly observant, never seemed to account for the fact that while they were unable to peek in, we teachers could monitor their every move.During recess, I frequently sat at my desk and graded papers. My workspace was flanked on two sides by an overhanging corner window, which permitted me to keep an eye on my students who were playing just outside. It was on such an occasion during my first year of teaching when, on one fine day in spring, I noticed one of my male students, Simon, betraying a protruding bulge on his left cheek. Upon a more concentrated examination I noticed that, whatever it was, he was chomping on it intermittently.Ruling out tobacco, I came to the quick conclusion that the substance in his mouth was chewing gum. The periodic bubble popping confirmed my suspicions.Simon's apparent ruse in sidestepping the rules was to conceal the contraband in his cheek while covertly chewing and popping in between turns at foursquare. After approaching Simon, and briefly discussing his lapse in judgment, I directed him to deposit his wad in the nearest receptacle. I turned and walked back to my classroom, trusting Simon would do as I asked. And sure enough, not more than a few seconds later I could see him heading toward the trash-can, which was right outside my door.Having relied on Simon to toss his gum, I returned to my desk and the mound of papers to grade. Within a few minutes, as it was my habit of doing, I lifted my head to check-in on my students at recess. Curiously, all five boys who were once playing four square had vanished. As I stood to get a wider view of where the boys had disappeared, I heard an uproar just outside my door. Deciding to get a good look at what sort of activity was causing the ruckus, I peered through the safety window before opening the door. There stood the five boys. Four of them had their backs to the playground, forming a tight semicircle, seemingly to shield prying eyes from the shenanigans enacted right in front of them by the fifth boy, Simon. His back was to a corner where two classrooms met at a right angle. The boys were laughing deliriously. Simon, however, was concentrating intently as though walking a tightrope above an unfathomable chasm. With his arms stretched wide and face locked downward, he and his cohorts were transfixed upon Simon’s trousers. In particular, the crotch. What I witnessed next is something for which my student teaching was ill-equipped to prepare me.Firstly, I discovered Simon did not pitch his gum as promised. No, he had other plans for its fate.Instead of placing his gum in the trashcan, Simon, for reasons he was never able to fully explain, was struck by the brilliant idea of pulling down his pants and underwear. This antic was screwy in of itself but nothing compared to what I saw next. The reason the other boys were laughing so uncontrollably and pointing at Simon's crotch was that he was performing his bare-butt act with the heap of purple gum adhered to the tip of his willy.Yes, you read that right. I caught my seven-year-old student, during recess, in full view of anyone who cared to observe, in a feat of balancing a large wad of chewing gum on the head of his not-quite-ready-for-primetime penis. Now, if you think to interpose and manage this incident felt awkward, just imagine what it was like conferencing with Simon's parents: ”Uh, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, I don’t know quite what to say, and as tactful as I hope to be, there truly is no delicate way of expressing what I’m about to share but the reason your son was sent to the principal’s office today was because he was caught in the act of entertaining four of his friends by…,” – you fill in how you would have described it.Over the years I’ve come to realize that not only how extraordinary it was for Simon’s gum to stick where he planted it, but the memory of his unique stunt has stuck with me for over four decades. Hopefully, you found it as priceless today as it was disconcerting way back in 1979.
