Art Exhibit Application: Fill & Download for Free

Not at all; I think it’s a lovely gesture. My husband Mike Bryan did this for me about 20 years ago, and flew my Mum in from interstate and arranged for us to go to an art exhibition together and a day’s worth of fun activities.Funny story, actually.We were both in the military at the time, and in the midst of organising flights and tickets and everything else, the one thing he did forget to organise was my leave application, and telling my boss. :)Fortunately, I had a very understanding boss, or he may have gotten me an AWOL (Absent WithOut Leave) charge for my birthday. That would have been memorable!

Many things, actually:Drinking alcohol in public everywhere and anytime you want. You can drink in public or in an Mc Donald’s, or during your lunch break at work. Public drinking is not frowned upon since we know (and expect) that you can drink alcohol and not get plastered.Taking your kids to restaurants, bars, pubs, fine dining places, cultural festivals, you name it. Here you are supposed to have a social public life at every stage of your life, not only in your 20s. Having children does not ban you from doing “cool adult things”. Conversely, you can sip fine beers and wines while watching your kids play if that’s more your thing. Needless to say, all of that also applies to elderly people too.Going places just by walking. There is no de facto mandatory car ownership via huge distances and low-density urbanism. Sidewalks are everywhere too, even in suburban and industrial zones. Needless to say, walkability also greatly helps handicapped and blind people too, since they don’t need drivers to do every single thing for them too.Buying “organic food” at regular prices, at regular supermarkets. Fresh produce and vegetables are cheap, ubiquitous and aplenty here, and they are the rule, not the exception that you find at Whole Foods.Forgetting about getting a car. Needless to say, that’s not applicable to 100% of our territory (hello, Madrid suburbia), but it is not that uncommon in mid-sized cities, as well as in our islands. Public transportation reigns supreme in most cases.Staring at people. People-watching is the most Mediterranean sport ever and there is no aggressive undercurrent here. We find weird and kinda sad that people in some cultures expect you to fight you just by committing the sin of staring at them. It is not considered rude nor aggressive here.Showing affection towards children while being male. The pedo scare has never taken root in our society, thank god for that. I can hug my nephew in public or enjoy playing with children without people assuming the worst about me.Being able to have fun completely free of charge, even outside big cities. Festivals here are aplenty and have been providing free drinks, meals and free spectacles since the Roman era or so. Public spaces abound. The government considers art to be a public good, so you can have a constant stream of concerts, art courses, and art exhibitions at discounted prices or for free, even in small towns. National Parks are free of charge. No hidden extra costs such as transportation either, since lots of small towns are integrated inside hiking routes, forests and the likes, so no need to own cars and pay for gas.Related to the previous point, you can get mauled by different fauna just for fun. No pesky suing for damages at the drop of a hat.You can have heavy PDA with your couple in the middle of the street, as nobody will bat an eye here, even if your partner is the same sex as yourself. When we “think of the children”, we also think that it’s quite good for children to see people loving each other.Jaywalking. Who the hell invented this ridiculous rule, we will never know, nor do we want to know.Doing whatever the f*ck you want with your stand-alone home since home owner’s associations don’t exist here and your house is your castle. Telling other neighbors what they can or can’t do with their private property sounds like a dystopian Orwellian nightmare to us.
