I think I would bring back slowness, the uninterrupted focus on what is at hand.Our children live in a world of cacophony. That seems to be their default setting.There are oases of peace, but they are exceptions to the stream of noise, visual stimuli, reactions that require reactions, and dull, shallow messages that are more about form than content.And children who are used to living in a world like that no longer have the patience to quietly wait for what is merely unfolding, what requires perseverance. They read less and consume more Youtube videos.And even children’s TV programs have changed.When my children were small, the delightful British series, Postman Pat, still carried the old-fashioned charm of bygone times. There was no hurry, people had time to stop to have a delightful conversation, and the pace of life was relaxed and leisurely.At some point, however, they turned the series into a hectic travesty of the original: Postman Pat Special Delivery Service. (I am out of breath just due to saying that title aloud!)No more leisure and charm. Suddenly everyone was in a hurry, and even the music was agitated — as if the supposition had been that children no longer have the stamina to peacefully sit and watch the more tranquil version.My daughter stopped liking the series right there and then.But even if my children dislike the most frenetic manifestations of the zeitgeist, they, too, are taken aback by the things we used to divert ourselves with in the 70s. That static stream of words instead of images! Multilayered language instead of plot twists! They cannot relate to what we found amazingly amusing.And while we often spent two or more weeks at a summer cottage in the middle of nowhere, without electricity, telephone, television, or even water closet, not to mention computers and mobile phones, the children of today take their smartphones with them wherever they go and fill their days with entertainment that only requires a short attention span.With my brother at our rented summer cottage at the end of the 70s.When nothing is happening, something has gone wrong.Of course we got bored, too, but getting bored is different when your own creativity is the only way out of that boredom.And we surely were creative! My mother still preserves the books, blank calendars that my father had brought from his workplace, that we filled with stories that we invented. The smaller ones told them aloud, and we, the older ones, wrote them down, adding our own stories to the mixture. We wrote long serial stories with protagonists who developed along the way, and most of the fun was in the elaboration of what was already familiar.And when we played, we created worlds. One of my favourite memories is the summer when we moved from one suburb of Helsinki, Vantaa, to another called Espoo. We processed the change by inventing a world in which the inhabitants of Vantaa, Espoo, Helsinki, and another little municipality Kauniainen all had their specific traditions and their distinct character, and in the course of events those features grew more authentic and more intricate.The creativity of my children is abundant, too, but in a slightly different way.
