PDF Editor FAQ

A tattoo shop won’t return my large deposit even though I decided not to get the tattoo. Can I sue?

A tattoo Deposit is left to secure your appointment time and date. Once your on the books, no one else can claim that time. By you cancelling, you cost the artist money they could have potentially made. Tattoo artists don’t get paid hourly, the get paid commission on the tattoos they do. A missed/cancelled appointment means loss of income for that day. Furthermore, the artist may have spent several hours researching and developing ideas and artwork for you. This is usually done in their spare time, sometimes at home late at night, taking away precious time they could be spending with family. I definitely side with the artist. Every single tattoo shop either has you fill out paperwork stating deposits are non-refundable, have some type of signage in the shop stating deposits are non refundable, or have a verbal agreement that deposits are non refundable or any combination of all three.

Why do tattoo shops allow people to get tattoos when they are drunk?

In my experience, many tattoo shops, and even individual artists, refuse to tattoo people who are intoxicated. For almost all of my tattoos, I have had to sign an agreement stating that I wasn’t currently under the influence, among other things.

How much would a talented tattoo artist charge a person to be an apprentice?

Kevin, I am sure you'll eventually read my answer to your other question (Marissa Tjartjalis's answer to Would student loans and grants be available to apprentices in a tattoo shop?)Please put emphasis on the last part I wrote in all caps. A signed and binding contract, that you each keep a copy on record of, will make sure you aren't screwed over in the end. There are certainly well renowned artists out there that are not scammers but do charge for apprenticeships. I do not know offhand what they would charge because, like the way they set their prices, the rate is completely at the artist's discretion. You will end up doing crappy grunt work either way before you even go near the basics of tattooing and handling the machine. This does not give the shop license to use you as a maid or a gofer for a year and completely ignore what you paid or agreed upon in your mentorship agreement. After a period of time earning your keep and observing the other artist, formal teaching should be taking place. Please be discerning in finding a mentor in your search for an apprenticeship. Shop around and ask all the people in your area you can find. Some might give you a chance free of charge, as long as you show your diligence and willingness to put in your hard work. Build up a strong portfolio and sell yourself. And depending on the person you consider agreeing to work for, contemplate whether it is worth thousands of dollars to work under this artist's tutelage and what results you would come out with.Hope this helps.
