PDF Editor FAQ
How much notice do military soldiers get for deployment?
A LOT.This is from my personal experience so I don’t know if someone’s might be different. We got back from PTA.PTA was a training exercise that was a month long. It was in the big island of Hawaii.Anyway, we got back from it and we found ourselves being the only company in uniform. We were in a civilian airport, so of course, it drew attention.A lot of us went to eat at this small restaurant in the airport. And before you know it, the restaurant was mostly filled by soldiers in uniform. This is not the original photo, but you get the idea.As we’re eating and enjoying the food because we were HUNGRY. We were tired of MRE’s. Anyway, as we were eating, a civilian gentleman stands up and says something like “We’d like to all thank you for your service.” Or something like that. He starts clapping and it wasn’t long until the other civilians got up and started clapping. I was surprised. I asked myself “Wow, civilians still care about the military?”Whenever you’re in uniform in a civilian airport, you WILL get noticed. After basic training, I was in uniform. Just a basic training graduate that had like 4 bags. A lot of people offered me help. I was wondering “Why are people being so nice? Did so much change while I was locked away from the civilian world during basic?” People were holding doors, people were saying “Thank you for your service.”While we were waiting to enter a civilian airport to go on a 45 day TDY, a Vietnam War veteran thanked us for our service. VIETNAM WAR VETERAN. Whenever a hero like that thanks me, I find it so honorable. A veteran like that is the reason I entered the military.Just a warning, if you’re wearing any sort of veteran cap whether it’s:I WILL thank you for your service and hope to get the privilege of shaking your hand.
Do you regularly drive a car that is more than 10 years old? What’s the best part of driving it?
Yes I do and many of them. At 53 years of age I have never had a car payment and have always had great cars and SUV’s at my disposal. My 1985 FJ60 Toyota Land Cruiser restomod with too many custom features to list here…1990 Mercedes Benz SL500 (bought in Hawaii with less than 75k on it)2004 Volvo XC90 also bought and sold via Craigslist on Oahu. Between the Benz, the Volvo and the Maxima, I made $1500 and got all my money back and enough to pay the maintenance and insurance on all three vehicles when it came time to move back to the mainland. After the Dot Com Market Bubble burst, I decided that instead of a new Nordhavn 46 that we would settle for an older Grand Banks and it was great. The SL500 even came with an aluminum hardtop that had never been opened from 1990 new, kept in the original box by the original owner, an admiral I think. This 2000 Toyota Landcruiser was bought new for $59,000 and I bought it for $8500 in 2012 and put over 200k miles on it and it still drove like new at 289k.I sold it to the first person that looked at it.This 2004 loaded Suburban was bought with 90,000 miles in 2010 for $3500 from the original owner. That purchase was the same day a dealer told me I could not get one under $10,000 and I showed him. This vehicle lasted almost 300k miles before I donated it to charity.I find value in pre-depreciated things like real estate too. The hotel in the background is approximately 300 years old on the Plaza Principal of Banamichi, Sonora, Mexico founded 1629.The first generation Mitsubishi Monteros were so cheap about 10 years ago that I bought three of them and could not tear them up. Donated them to friends, Mexicans and a charity and they are still ticking. Built like tanks.Bought this 2003 VW Jetta Sportswagen TDi for $6800 with under 70k miles from an engineer in Huntsville, Alabama and put over 200k miles on it at nearly a 50 mpg average and got about $4k out of it after 10 years use. My wife loved this vehicle. Handled like an Audi, efficient as a Prius, and as reliable as a Toyota.Last Fall I flew down to Florida to pick-up this California (Palm Springs) Lexus SC430 and I stole it for $6800 out the door. Turned down $20k two weeks later (should have taken it). But I am confident I can drive this 5–10k miles a year and in 10–20 years, this car will be worth a lot more than what I paid for it.Big Blue is for sale now on AutoTrader dot com if you wanna look her up. Great value and sometimes appreciation.I found this photo of the best car deal of this last century, my 2010 VW Touareg 2 TDi that I bought for $15k out the door with 89k on the odometer, drove it a year and a half, got up to 160k on the clock when I was forced to turn it over to VW in a class action suit called “Diesel Gate”, they paid me $28,900 and then 6 months later Bosch sent me a check (I was NOT expecting) for $1500. That doesn’t happen every day.If I wasn’t willing to drive a fleet of fine vehicles that were 10 or more years old, I would not be able to say that these fine rides have cost me nothing (after mileage deductions for work are taken into account). Even the maintenance and insurance was likely covered. All you have to do is buy them right and maintain them, and drive the wheels off them. Cars and trucks are made great since about ‘95–05 and some models well before that.Don’t let the flash of a new techno-laden car with 0% loan for 72 months fool you.
What were you in prison for?
I was in prison for adultery. I was in the Marine Corp stationed in Hawaii and I was 19 years old at the time. I met a lady a little older than myself and early on I did not know that she was married but after I did find out it did not matter to me. I was in Love. Her husband was in the Air Force stationed TDY and I ended up getting the lady pregnant. Her husband ended up catching us and he and I got into a physical fight and I won but I was locked up and Prosecuted for what the military called Adultery but the official charge was having a sexual relationship with a married woman “not my wife” and I ended up doing almost 3 years in federal prison. Believe it or not most states have a law against adultery but never prosecute anyone for it.The husband wanted to take their children away from her and I was offered a deal that if I were to testify that she was a neglectful mother I would not get any time. I loved the woman and I could not do that. In 1962 it was hard to take children away from their natural mom. She did testify against me and I instantly forgave her as she had 2 other children to think of and she was pregnant as well. After she delivered the baby, my mother ended up adopting him and my parents raised him to adulthood. His name is Tony. I never saw her again but I did end up in touch with her and stayed in touch until her death a few years ago. I still love her
