I purchased a used motorcycle that had a couple of mechanical issues for $6000 (which was a bargain) and fixed the few things that were wrong, which the previous owner didn’t have the money or skill to repair. The insurance company set the ‘agreed value’ of the bike at $8400 and I happily took out the policy (they were aware of the purchase price).Just under a year later my bike was stolen from my house and never recovered. I lodged my claim form and a few weeks later got a call from the insurance company. They claimed they’d reviewed my case and decided the bike wasn’t worth $8400 after all, but only the $6000 I’d paid for it. So they told me they’d refund the difference in premium I’d paid for the higher value coverage (maybe $100) and pay me $6000 for the bike. Of course there was no way I would agree to this so we got into a protracted argument over the next few weeks (I couldn’t afford a lawyer).During one of our heated exchanges over the phone, I let slip the name of the motorcycle dealership that had done work on my bike the week before it was stolen, although I didn’t even realise it during the conversation. A couple of hours later I got a call from the dealership to let me know the insurance agent had called them and had tried to get them to say my bike was only worth $6K. Unfortunately for him, the service manager actually said something along the lines of “that bike was cherry and was worth at least $10K”.
