Semitic languages form one of the branches of the Afro-Asiatic family. They all descend from the Proto-Semitic language, which was spoken in the Levant about 6,000 years ago. Semitic languages are very important to the study of Afro-Asiatic (albeit overstudied relative to other Afro-Asiatic branches), partly because of their early written attestation, such as Akkadian, which was first written about 4,500 years ago, the earliest attestation in the branch.Above: Written chronological history of the Semitic languages. Thus, while Proto-Semitic did have agricultural terms, its ancestor, which was maybe spoken in the Pre-Pottery Neolithic B Period (PPNB), did not. Get to campus early. Parking can be difficult at times- unless you live on campus. Initially sign up for a maximum number of classes- during the early drop period- 1st 2 weeks- keep the classes you like the most and will do the best in.Drop courses that not well taught or impossible to get an A in. You will be left with courses that you have rapport with the Professor, and can get an A in. Also, attend every single class session, and take good notes. You won’t have to study as hard.Make appropriate visits to your Professors office hours. If they are published- ask them to sign the book. Find a Mentor you have a good rapport with. Cram for tests. No matter how much you study during the course- after the test dump it and drive on. Treat your studies as a job.Stay away from distractors, and negative, and toxic people. You will be fine. Good luck. I graduated with a 4.0, and I basically did what I shared with you. It’s like a big game- and you figure out the templates.Also study what you are passionate about and what you’re good at. Eat healthy- not garbage food. Work out regularly. Wake up at the same time each day- and make your bed properly. This actually helps set your mind for the day. Entropy and chaos must be fought back with regularity and order.Take lots of time to relax, read, and contemplate. Enjoy the football games. Get to know the library and spend time there. If the standards for writing papers is still the same- get a copy of Turabians book of style. Get and become familiar with whatever the current standard is.Also find out what word processor is used uniformly by the university and get and use it. For me it was Word Perfect- it’s probably Microsoft Word these days.With papers- professors LOVE lots of long, obscure, highly micro-detailed footnotes- jam packed with information that is not critical to the structure of paper due to limitations of depth and length, but of anecdotal interest.I have found, that for me, long footnotes discussing at length minutiae related in an ancillary manner to the facts of the paper can illustrate avenues of possible further interest, and lets the professor know you’ve done beaucoup research, and hopefully will think you know your stuff.Sometimes my footnotes were as long as the written part of paper. I went to town with them. It’s an academic- serious scholarly- cultural type thing. It is germane to the “comfort zone” of excellent professors. It adds a nice touch, and improves the impact of a paper, if done well.Wear nice comfortable clothes, make yourself presentable. Do not sit in the front row. Sit back a ways off to the side- left or right. Take the same seat every time. Have a clear view of the blackboard and the Professor.If you can discreetly record the Professors class with your smart phone- do it. Then use a voice-to-text application. Format and quickly edit the text, and you have an excellent study guide. Still, also take written notes. And definitely read and understand the entire assigned text. This really helps.Don’t walk in late to class constantly. It’s not the image you want to project. Don’t waste time getting to be friends with, or bullshit with students sitting near you. It’s a waste of time.When classes are over- get out of dodge- go to where you stay. Don’t ever cheat. Do not collaborate with other students unless part of a project. Your job is to excel at the course- and CRUSH the power curve. Relying on the grade curve is a crutch. Participate in class- but not too much. Don’t ask stupid questions.Be wary of information you use from the internet. The library is a better choice than Wikipedia. Be sure to use primary sources, and have a robust bibliography. Don’t get sucked into a bunch of bullshit extracurricular activities until later during you time at Auburn. Like maybe your Junior Year.Your job is to excel at your classes and get the highest grades possible. Treat it like a job, or a mission, and you’ll be fine. Moderation in all things. Don’t make enemies. Be professional, be polite, and be easy to get along with. Don’t stick out. Treat your professors professionally and respectfully. Remember- they are the gatekeepers between you and your degree.Don’t do anything crazy or stupid, or dangerous to your health. And remember- THIS IS NOT HIGH SCHOOL. You have a lot to assimilate and deal with. Where classes are; parking stickers; administrative stuff, registration, the bookstore and computer labs and the library. Keep an A5 sized otebook with you- like Moleskine; or Leuchtturm Bullet notes, or a pocket sized notebook planner like The A6 Hobonichi Techo- 4” x 6” (all vailable from Japanese Pens and Stationery at http://jetpens.com)- and take notes and make diagrams and sketches about anything you think you will never need to remember.
