Why would self disclosure by a therapist be deemed beneficial with clients/patients that have experienced trauma more so than other types of issues?

There are two types of self disclosure. One involves the therapist sharing personal information with the client. If the therapist had experienced a similar type of trauma as the patient and chose to share that as a way of building trust and forming a therapeutic alliance, that would be one type of self disclosure.The second type of self disclosure is when the therapist may choose to share her feelings, thoughts and reactions about something the client is presenting and processing. In the old school “one person “ model of therapy, the therapist was to be a neutral “ blank slate” trying to reveal as little about themselves as possible.A “two person “ or relational model puts more emphasis on the real relationship between the therapist and client. Trying to be a neutral blank slate is not only impossible, but has been shown to be counter productive particularly with patients suffering from disorders stemming from relational trauma.For patients with trauma-shame disorders, mirroring the client's emotional state affirms the patient and allows them to feel seen. Disclosing in an open transparent way how the therapist is affected by the client's truth validates the patients subjective reality and let's the client know that they bring value and meaning to others because of who they are in their essence.
