PDF Editor FAQ

Would people in selective high schools be smarter than those who are at the top of public high schools?

Selective high schools are public high schools, at least here in Chicago. They take the top students from the other public schools. So, by default, the selective schools tend to have smarter students than non-selective public schools.

How is college better than high school?

Your professors do not waste precious instructional time on discipline. Everyone in your class wants to be there (unless, of course, their name is Olivia Jade).Your professors have almost complete freedom on what they teach and how they teach. Although this freedom creates the best classes--it likewise creates the worst.Your schedule is more flexible. Want to cut class and get some extra sleep? No one will stop you (except, perhaps, that nagging feeling of responsibility).Because of the more selective and vast student body, you are more likely to make friends you like, instead of convenient friendships. You are inside a classroom less. A full day in college usually consists of about two or three classes, often with significant gaps in between.Your class discussions are enriching and exhilarating because of the high caliber of your peers. You have freedom.

As a high school teacher, what are some attitudes/values your students learned from their parents at home that you wish they were never taught?

I teach middle school, but there is one value that I really, really wish parents would stop teaching their children at my school.First, you have to understand that the only good high schools in Chicago are selective or private. The regular neighborhood public high schools that you go to just because you live close to them are, for the most part, horrible. Private high schools cost about $15,000 annually, so nearly all of my students aim for one of the selective public high schools. Those are high schools that pull in the best and brightest students from all over the city.Part of the process to get into one of those selective high schools includes your final grades from your 7th grade year. But not all of your grades… just your final grades from four core classes. Grades from “special” classes, like music, art, and gym, don’t count towards your high school placement. As a result, some parents tell their children that those classes don’t matter at all, and they don’t care if they fail those special classes. I’ve been in a meeting where the parent actually turned to their child and said, “you don’t have to do the work for that class, it’s not important.” The class in question was Art, and the art teacher was sitting right next to me in the meeting. We were dumbstruck that a parent would say that.A lot of parents have that attitude. The result is that several students who are well-behaved and motivated in the core classes treat the special classes like recess time. They act out, disrupt the class, and are very rude to the teachers. I’ve walked by special classes before and I was convinced there wasn’t even a teacher in there because the students were being so loud and obnoxious. Only when I poked my head into the classroom did I see the teacher, doing their best to control the students, but fighting a losing battle, because the students had it in their head that the class wasn’t important.Just because a class “doesn’t count” towards the next level doesn’t mean you should be rude to the teacher and keep your classmates from learning.
