How come there are so many IAS toppers from FMS, Delhi University?

As a FMS Grad into IAS, I believe I am well equipped to answer this question. The ratio of students coming into Civil Services from all top B school to their total strength has been on rise since 2011. And this ratio is more or less same for IIMs and FMS. You will hardly find people from XL or ISB or SP Jain or other B schools coming in.Why I consider FMS grads better placed to prepare / crack UPSC than other MBA gradsLow fees leads to no pressure of repayment of student loan .. freedom to take risksLow academic rigour ... enough time to prepare for civilsVery helpful and encouraging faculty members who will inspire you to join services, many a times over high paying IB or consultancy jobsEasier to get all necessary study materials being in DelhiMixed hostels with other stream DU students ... interaction with them benefits you ..Lutyens Delhi charm attracts you towards civil serviceExposure and interaction with a number of serving as well as retired bureaucratsGetting a chance to study at such a low cost ... propels you to contribute towards nation building directly sacrificing high pay jobsMost importantly, if you are taking management as optinals, you have higher chance to score well as syllabus of upsc management exam, question paper pattern and taste of examiner matches highly with our FMS faculty :)FMS being more recognised in Delhi NCR circle, many a times more than L I and K, gives you a good reputation and a headstart in UPSC interviewsEvery year there are a few guys who join FMS because they dont want to show two blank years on their resume. Plus MBA will be a great safety net in case you miss IASI hope these reasons are good enough for you to join Civil Services over normal MBA job... as they for me :)

Why do so many people from Engineering and IT hate their jobs?

A2ATo go along with Mohit Nirmal’s post, some people go into those fields because they don’t know what is exactly involved. When I joined the Navy, I wanted to go into the nuclear program, because everyone always told me that I should do it because I’m smart and I wanted a challenge.I was accepted and graduated from the program, but the reality was nowhere near what the school prepared me for. While the class work is pretty much what you would expect (metallurgy, heat transfer, fluid dynamics, nuclear physics, etc.), when I got to the fleet, the actual work was not anything like that. The actual job was just walking around a space for six hours, looking at gauges and writing down values, pumping tanks, and generally trying to stay awake when nothing is happening. The most action I got is when it was time to sample the steam generator water or add chemicals. The only time we ever used our school knowledge was for our annual reactor safety exam, or when taking the basic engineering qualification exam every few years. Even during our training drills, when we simulated various accidents, we didn’t have to use much, if any, of our classroom knowledge. So, it was very frustrating to have spent nearly two years in school and, effectively, never actually use that knowledge. On the IT side, the biggest problem I have found is that most people don’t realize, or possibly care, that there are over a dozen different subsets within the IT field. Thus, I’ll get asked about databases or networking but my background isn’t in that, so people will get upset when I can’t answer their questions. And, like doctors, we get asked to help diagnose computer problems wherever we go, which can be frustrating for people who aren’t help desk technicians. Imagine being a software developer and your friends and family are always asking you to help figure out why a printer doesn’t work or how to set up their iPhone to work with their PC.So, while engineering and IT can be great fields, people going into them may not know the full ramifications of what they are getting into, especially if they are pressured by their parents. Once they are in that field, it can be difficult to get out, either due to parents or because you have already invested so much in that career. Hating your job just becomes part of your nature because you realize that you’re pretty much stuck in a “dead-end” job.

Why is it so difficult to get a German driving license?

Theory exam:Theory exam consists of 30 multiple choice, multiple answer questions. So, there can be at least one or more or all choices possible. Wrong/insufficient answers score minus/null points. Passing score is 100 out of total 110. This makes theory exam more tricky! You need to practice the questions a lot and sometimes mug up the answers. There are some publications which provide possible 1000+ Questions & Ans.Now just take an example question from theory exam below:This traffic sign indicates -Chances of a cow on the roadChances of a dog on the roadNo parkingChances of dirt on the roadAnswer:As most of you guessed - choice 1 is correct, no doubt about that (?) But did you guess choices “2” & “4”? The correct choices are: 1,2, and 4. Dogs (and other farmyard pets) along with Cows can be understood. But, why “4” is also correct? The official explanation says - maybe the cow sh#tted on the road (cow-dung) or, cow didn’t wash her feet before crossing the road (mud). They (cow-dung and mud) together may increase the braking distance significantly.I am not kidding, I really failed that question. If you are interested then you can try the theory exams here: Test1 or Test2Practical exam:It consists of full 45 minutes of driving with your instructor (in co-driver seat) and an inspector/examiner (across seat in the back). The instructor is there just to press the brakes in case of emergency and not for a help. A buzzer goes off, if instructor touches any of the pedals (fail!). Rest of the time, he will chit-chat with inspector. Never ever take part in that interesting conversation (fail!).The inspector is closely observing you during 45 min. test. A small mistake and game over! On exam day, a girl opted to take exam first, so I ordered a coffee. They hardly went for 5 min. and came back - before my coffee was ready. My instructor told me later on, that she was nervous and jumped on the first traffic light which just turned red and game over.During the test, he will ask you to drive on busy roads in city, one ways, motorways (Autobahn), side parking, reversing, right before left crossings, and all kinds of yoga. He will keenly observe you (while talking to instructor) whether you read all the road-signs correctly and not miss (or mess) any (I wished I had 8 eyes like a spider and 8 limbs like an octopus!)The most tricky part for me was side-parking. It’s not that I could not park sideways. But after I parked, he just asked me one question - “have you parked correctly?”. I know this Q from my instructor and answer too. I confidently said “Yes”. If you say “No”, then he will ask you to correct until you finally say “Yes”. Then, he will check whether you look out of the window (by turning head, not just checking mirrors and side-indicator ON) before you take the car out of the parking lot (checking blind spots).Well I did pass both the exams in first attempt, especially the driving exam coincidentally on 1st April. I confirmed with the inspector directly whether he was not (April) fooling around ;) He signed and gave me the driving license on the spot after the practical exam. Then I was on cloud 9. But that needed dedicated practice for both theory and practical exams. Don’t underestimate them. It’s not over after you get a driving license. You will be in two years of probation period. If you commit some serious offense, then your driving license will be suspended and you need to repeat the course again. After successful two years of driving, if you commit some serious offense, then the driving license can be suspended for at least 6 months (point based system) and sometimes you need to repeat the course, and/or to take medical-psychological examination (especially for drug/drunk-driving).Here is the list of penalties for various offenses. The following video shows how the practical exam is conducted in short:Expenses:German driving test is not only challenging but expensive as well. I spent around €1800 ($2000) in the year 2010!€550 for registration, theory material, first-aid course, eye-sight & hearing tests, exam fees etc.€250 = 14 sessions per 90 min. theory classroom course€990 = 22 sessions x €45 per driving lesson (45 min.) Minimum 12 lessons are compulsory (motorways, countryside roads, city roads, night driving etc.) Rest depend on your skills. On an average, people spent around €1500 to €2200 on driving license depending on their skills, instructor, city they stay, language of the exam (source). Re-examination costs even more, because they must repeat few driving lessons and moreover pay exam fees (around €150). If you are an Expat from developing/ underdeveloped countries, then prepare to take more driving lessons. What makes matter worst, when you are from those countries with left-hand driving system (my case!)The German driving schools also offer psychological (psychiatrist’s) support to overcome driving fears, exam failures and building confidence which costs again extra. Conclusion:At the end, it's all about discipline and safety of yours and others. You are sitting behind the wheel of a two ton killing machine. Little negligence can cost lives! So, the toughness of the exam is very well justified (except the cost part). Happy driving!
