I got a chance to visit Tokyo for free!!It was back in 2012. I was 16 and studying in 10th standard. The trip was an exchange programme of the Japanese government named Japan-East Asia Network for Students and Youths(JENESYS).The story of how this happend to me goes like this. At first, let me give a brief overview of my schooling background. I was studying in Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Hailakandi, Assam back then, a type of residential school funded by the Ministry of Human Resource Development of India.So it was a typical sunday in my school and I was busy washing my clothes. I was in bathroom when a boy(one of my junior) came to me and informed me that our Biology sir is looking for me and asked me to meet him in the staff room immediately. I left the bathroom in hurry, put on a t-shirt and ran towards the academic building. On entering the staff room, I saw our Biology sir, sitting there surrounded by few students. I went near and he handed me a form and asked me to fill it up. While I was filling the form, he explained to me that a new notification has come from the Regional office of Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti about an exchange program to Japan. The responsibility was given to him to nominate three students from our school to be considered by the selection committee in New Delhi. So he choose to nominate the toppers from class 8, 9 and 10. He aslo told us that students of schools, colleges and universities all over India are also being considered for nomination and made it very clear that the probability of selection is rare. Even students of IITs and IIMs are also being nominated for the purpose.I was very excited about it but having known that even IITians were nominated for it, I lost all hopes instantly of having any chance to get selected and thus, in a day or two I forgot about the whole thing.Three months later, I called my mother to give her the list of stuffs I need her to bring while she visits me next time. That's when my father, in a very excited voice, told me that someone from New Delhi called him that morning and informed him that I got selected for the programme and asked him to apply for my passport as soon as possible and send it to them when it was ready.It took me a moment to absorb the news. I almost forgot about it, thinking that it won't ever happen to me and now it has. I was so happy and excited that day. The call was from the travel agency which was appointed the task of the management of the programme. So they informed the students who were selected, personally, and not the school. So I ran to the principal chamber and told our principal ma'am about it. She made a few calls to the Regional office and confirmed the news. This is it, I got selected. The next day, it was announced in the morning assembly and that made me famous in my school.I was so elated as it was my first foreign visit and it was like a dream come true for me. I felt like I was on cloud nine. My parents were so excited and proud of me. Overnight, I became role model of many and that was one of the greatest feelings ever. I was also the first from my school to have gotten such an opportunity and all my teachers were so proud and excited about it.This is the best thing happened to me. I belong to a middle class family and it is not at all realistic to even think of such a tour, let alone actually going. My father couldn't have afforded such a lavish trip ever for me. But it was him, who got me admitted in that very school, which opened such new avenues for me.It is the best trip of my life till date. I experienced a lot of new things and got to see the vast world outside. That was for the first time I travelled in an aeroplane, the first time I stayed in a 7 star hotel and a first time for uncountable other things.Overall, it was quite an experience. It really doesn’t get much more complicated than money. Bloomberg is rich. Like, really really rich.Me doing my Bloomberg impression.How rich? Well, I could tell you that he’s at least an order of magnitude—maybe two—wealthier than Donald Trump. Or, I could quote this article from The Intercept linked to me by Jeremy Arnold:The salaries being paid to Bloomberg staffers are well above market rates, and often come with housing included, as well as a laptop and an iPhone. One operative lured to Bloomberg’s office in New York said she observed a seemingly endless wall of iPhones stacked like bricks as far as she could see. Another said that Bloomberg offered a job to one operative who didn’t take it, but still received a laptop and iPhone from the campaign in the mail anyway, presumably by sheer dint of onboarding momentum.This kind of spending is unprecedented, and its effects are far more disruptive than those of previous self-funders. We’ve had rich people self-fund in the past—we actually have another rich person self-funding right now. But Bloomberg is on a whole different level.Tom Steyer, in spending his money, is only flooding the airwaves. It’s been enough to gain him some traction in Nevada and South Carolina polls, but it doesn’t fundamentally affect the way the other campaigns operate. But when Bloomberg spends his money—$200 million and counting after less than three months in the race—per the Intercept article, it’s crowding other campaigns out of not just the airwaves, but out of campaign staff as well:Progressive groups, local campaigns, and presidential operations are either losing staff to the Bloomberg campaign, or are struggling to hire people because the former mayor has picked so many political operatives and canvassers up, according to interviews, emails, and messages from dozens of people involved in hiring….[Milwaukee County Executive candidate Chris] Larson said he lost one junior staffer, who Bloomberg is “running … ragged for $6k/month. Other campaigns for county exec lost a field coordinator and another lost his campaign manager. There’s a ton of other politicos pulled over from other campaigns and government jobs.”John Rocco Calabrese is running for State Assembly in Wisconsin. “I’ve heard from friends across the state who are affected by Bloomberg sweeping up managers and staff. It’s a tsunami of Bloomberg. He’ll have a rep at our County Dem meeting Thursday and even at a small County Board Spring Election fundraising event next Monday….”Rob Quan, a political operative in Los Angeles, is currently consulting for a local city council candidate. “This is hands down the toughest time I’ve ever had finding field staff,” he said. He’s posting jobs for canvassers, paying $18 an hour, and is “getting crickets.”Courage California, a major progressive coalition in the state, lost its top digital staffer ahead of the March 3 California primary, “hobbling their political program,” said one operative the organization approached to try to fill the gap quickly.Other campaigns—not just presidential campaigns, but down to the local level—are actually being starved of the campaign staff they need to run properly.It’s helped, incidentally, that Joe Biden lost so badly in Iowa and New Hampshire. Bloomberg is firmly in the moderate lane and typically stands to gain ground when Biden loses it. Which is exactly what’s been happening:And that also coincides with an ongoing reevaluation by some of Biden’s endorsers in Congress, particularly some black members of Congress, with Gregory Meeks and Lucy McBath endorsing Bloomberg just two days ago. Bloomberg’s investment in the 2018 midterms also appears to be paying dividends: so far he’s been endorsed by six Democratic House freshmen, all of whom were the beneficiaries of Bloomberg’s largesse that year. And that, of course, is more fodder for the hundreds of millions of dollars’ of ads that Bloomberg will continue to air until the day someone—whether it’s him or someone else—gets the nomination.So again—money.

When you need to cut your payroll, which until media kicks in is the major component of your burn rate in a campaign, you can't do it by axing $$2500 a month state coordinators. Ciccone was making $12,000 a month.There is no suggestion that I know about that Ciccone was let go for any cause other than tight money. Someone has to do the work she was doing for less money now, which in turn makes it harder for the campaign to keep raising money efficiently, so this isn't a happy day for the Bush campaign.However, John McCain had a very similar point in his campaign where he was out of money and written off, and he got nominated. Judge Bush's chances by his debate performances, if you will, but he is not the candidate most likely to run out of ability to raise funds first.
