I had jury duty for a lawn mower case. One summer, a local attorney went down to our home town ACE Hardware a number of years ago to buy a lawn tractor. He wanted something to mow his lawn and that could also plow his garden. The gentleman at ACE sold him a lawn tractor with 10″ wheels and, according to the attorney, assured him it could plow a garden.Most farmers will tell you that plow tractors have those huge wheels for a reason. They are needed to get enough torque and bite for pulling the plow. Of course, when the attorney gets around to plowing the garden the next spring, after a season of mowing the lawn, those small wheels just spun when he tried to plow.Long story short, the attorney thought he should be compensated for being defrauded. The attorney told ACE the tractor was in his field waiting for them to pick it up and compensate him. The home town ACE disagreed and they got into a seven year pissing contest while the almost new tractor rusts in the field.Every juror was pissed off that we were pulled into jury duty for a seven year case about a lawn mower that cost $2500. Half the jury felt for the store and the others for the attorney. The attorney was hoping to get $25,000 to teach the store owners a lesson. We awarded the attorney $2000 plus interest, about $2500 total.

He accidentally killed himself doing yard work one sunny afternoon.He wanted to pull down a low, dead limb from a pine tree next to his house. He tossed the steel cable of a come-along winch over the limb, cinched it up, and attached the lower end to his lawn tractor.He got on the tractor and started to drive slowly away from the tree, figuring the cable would snap the limb off the trunk. As the cable pulled taut, it contacted the power line into his house. Electrical line, steel cable, tractor . . . my neighbor was electrocuted on the spot.Hard to believe. He was a nice guy, father of two pre-teens, always helpful to his neighbors. Without him bringing home a paycheck, his property fell to ruin and the wife and children moved away not long after, not heard from since.

It’s not age it’s one mental and physical health that determines that.My father was still doing well, living independently in his own home, when he died at 91. He was grocery shopping alone two days before he died and went to breakfast with friends the morning before he died. He was still driving (scary to think about). He had a bad heart and COPD but all of a sudden his kidneys shut down.He had driven his farm tractor to plow his garden a month before he died and was still riding his lawn tractor to mow his two acre lawn a week or so earlier.Here is his picture, lying in a hospital bed about five hours before he died, eating pie and smiling. A couple hours later he fell asleep and died a couple hours after that.
