Not quite 6 months ago, I wrote this: Habib Fanny's answer to Why will Habib Fanny never move to the Pacific Northwest?And yet, I am moving to Oregon in less than 3 months. My last day of work in Tennessee will be the Ides of March. Beware!Why am I moving?Part of it is that I’ve never grown roots in the Memphis area. All my romantic prospects failed. I never fell in love with the city. I’ve felt culturally out of place among so many evangelicals. And lastly, I wasn’t entirely happy at my job. I wasn’t unhappy; it was just that there were things I felt ought to be changed, but that I didn’t have the power to change. And since I am young and idealistic enough to think that perhaps the grass could be greener elsewhere, I decided to see what other opportunities were available.There was Tacoma, WA. I would have jumped at the opportunity, but there were too many doctors for too few patients, and my income would have taken a significant hit.There was Iowa City, IA, where I went to med school. I wasn’t opposed to returning—there is a Costco and a Trader Joe’s, after all—but it wasn’t number one on my list. It was also going to be a brand new hospital, so that a lot of kinks would have to get worked out.There were Everett, WA, Urbana, IL and Cincinnati, OH, but all of these positions got filled before I could even interview.There was Lafayette, IN, which I very much wasn’t in love with. There was Bloomington, IN, which I was very ambivalent about.There was a hospital in the tiny town of Portsmouth, OH. And there was another place in North Dakota—and I would almost rather move to North Korea.I decided that I needed to give myself a chance to live in a place where I would maximize my chances of finding a compatible romantic partner. Eugene, OR seemed like the best bet out of all those places. It felt like a bigger Ann Arbor, the city I consider my home town.So that’s where I’m moving, and where I expect to be living for at least the next 2.5 years. I hope it works out.

I think I have a unique answer for this question.Free food, free drinks and pets at work are just fine.At Intel USA, we have a thing called “Intel Shuttle”. We use it to get around different Intel sites. It’s available to Intel employees for free and it commutes between different sites at least 3 times a day.It looks like this:I doubt if any other company has its own planes which are available for use to any employee.There are no security checking lines, no waiting, no hassles. We book the shuttle from internal website and show up at the airport with our badge and ID, that’s it. And we have a rental car waiting for us just outside.Intel has its own hangar at San Jose airport and a complete airport in Oregon within 2 miles from the Intel campus. It might be similar for other sites too. but I haven’t been there personally.It saves countless hours for Applications Engineers and Sales folks who commute for most part of their jobs. By having this perk available, an employee easily saves 4–5 hours per trip. So it becomes possible for him/her to return home the same day.Intel saves the money it would spend on overnight hotel stays plus the wasted work hours of the employee in the commute. The planes are at least 80% full all the time so it makes sense for Intel to continue this service.Win Win for both.Edit 1: People are pointing out in the comments that some other companies used to have this perk or some still have it. This service is available to all permanent employees of Intel and not for contract employees. The service operates on daily basis to and from to few cities. So as long as we have a meeting or something in one of those cities, we sure can use this.

No. Residence is defined by intent: you are a resident of the state in which you intend to reside permanently, the state to which you intend to return. Working in another state does not make you a resident of that state. Indeed, there are many people who live on state borders who live in one state and work in another. They remain residents of the state where they live. Of course, if you do something that only a resident can do, like registering to vote or getting a driver’s license, then you will be indicating an intent to remain in the state in which you do that. And in some cases a prolonged sojourn in a state will raise a presumption that you intend to remain there, although that presumption can be rebutted by contrary evidence. But a part time job in a state where you live temporarily, while maintaining a California address, voter registration, and driver’s license, will not defeat your California residence for tuition purposes.
