India, like most countries, follows the fiat money.This means that the money shall have value because it is written in the law. Contrast this with the historically used method of currency backing wherein the government was required to hold some assets (typically gold) as a basis for issuing the currency. Nowadays no such basis is required.Hence, the Indian currency is the ₹1 note or coin.All other banknotes are just promises to pay the Indian currency.When you hold the ₹1 note or coin, you hold the currency of India.But when you hold a ₹2000 note, you hold the right to receive 2000 notes of ₹1. Similarly, when you hold a note of ₹50, you hold the right to receive 50 notes of ₹1. Such notes are called:*Star Series Notes*The star series notes look exactly like the existing notes but have an additional character i.e. a * (star) in the number panel between the prefix and serial number.Here’s what you need to know about these notes:In the printing stage of notes, when any defect is detected, such notes are replaced by star series notes.That is why these notes are also called replacement notes.This is done in compliance with international best practices and to ensure cost effective printing system.The issue of star series notes started from year 2006 for notes of denomination 10, 20 and 50.From 2009, star series notes started getting printed for notes of denomination 100 also.Star series notes have the same serial number as defected notes but different prefix. If you have personally attended the classes then the notes of few subjects will be useful. However, if you have never been to Vajiram and have purchased these notes then you won’t be able to make much sense out of them.The notes of subjects like: Current Issues, Science & Tech, Sociology, India Year Book etc. should be better left untouched.Few sections of notes by Manocha Sir on Geography are good. Similar story for Polity, Economy and Ethics.Overall, it’s advisable to study from standard textbooks than follow any coaching institute notes. The reason being that the notes of these coaching institutes are more or less short summary of standard textbooks. Moreover, these notes don't cover the syllabus completely. Therefore, one has to invariably go through the books to get a complete picture.Instead of classroom notes I would suggest going through printed notes published by coaching institutes.Environment by Shankar IAS is the final word when it comes to ecology and environment section.Economics by SriRam IAS is good.
