Current largest helicopter in production Mi26 can lift an airplane with ease.It can carry 90 troops in miletary configuration or 60 passengers in commarcial setting and that is absolutely huge for an helicoptor.The World's Largest Helicopter Can Lift An Airliner With Remarkable EaseHowever I would highly doubt the technical feasibility of a helicoptor which is of the size of A380 or lets just say can carry 500+ passengers. I would not enter the discussion about how utterly useless the design would be as the only place i can see a practicle use of it is if some one wants to drop 500 people on an island which is not long enough to hold a runway (May be the Russians could have built it but that hope is no more now that cold war is over ;) )The blades of Mi26 are same as wing span of one A320 wing so you can imagin that they are absolutely huge.However largest ever helicoptor is not Mi26 it is as shown below:Mil MI12WORLDS LARGEST HELICOPTER Russian Mil V 12 Mi 12 bigger than us army Boeing CH-47 ChinookSo as you can see that this is more of an A320 with rotors. It was designed to carry 40 tons of load so technically it could lift 500 normal sized humans in the air (there...it can be done!, mission accomplished)(I just had fun imagining 500 people in that space just imagine if someone felt like answering nature's call... Man... You got to hold it we are in the Air...! ;) and we forgot the toilets on ground ;), may be some extra people could be hanged inside few sacks just to enjoy the paragliding experience for free and save some space in the cabin... ;-))Jokes apart:As the size of the craft will increase so will the requirement for bigger blades and material science will come into play (material like that will be really hard to find.) And not to mention large blades of that size, if at all possible, at the tips will have supersonic speeds which will again lead to aerodynamic limits technically to how fast the blade can spin and I am sure that with that kind of spin there will not be enough lift to pull that much mass in the air.If at all a craft like that will be made it will never be made out of materails we commarcially know today may be carbon nano tubes or some super light and super strong foam or something completely new (whenever we get the technology to make them in tons and use them too).And please don't be inspired by the Avenger class flying ships from the movie, they are not coming any sooner than the appereance of Thor in the realm of the mortals.(Where one of the giant rotors was stuck and Iron Man managed to super spin it to keep the ship aflot, to whoever said bollywood movies are funny he he)(By the way I am a big fan of Avengers movie ;-)) !
