While firearms suicide kills some 20K people a year, and firearms homicide another ~10K, these deaths are intentional. “High levels of training” doesn’t stop them. The whole point of training would be to reduce these accidental deaths, right? All 500 of them. And frankly, it’s unclear how many of these deaths are really in scope… Most gun accidents involve other factors (alcohol is common) that sortof mean that they aren’t really part of what “high levels of training” would cover. Ironically, high levels of training may actually increase overall gun deaths if people were better shots! I just can’t point to all that many gun deaths that make me think “Wow, if they were just better trained, they would still be alive”. Again, this isn’t really a training thing.Related to that, there seems to be a lot of confusion as to what training really is. I can’t train someone to not be an idiot when it comes to firearms. I can train you to be a better shooter and have muscle memory for some safety practices, but I can’t train you to not be stupid. Most fatal firearms accidents are because stupidity.Cars aren’t the same thing. You get a driver's license to drive on a public highway, where you have to know a lot of rules. You also need training to use the complex beast that a car is in the environment where it will be used. Public roads, with lots of other cars in close proximity. This just isn’t the same thing with guns (outside of carry permits, where we generally DO require some training). Indeed, you can go and buy a car and drive it around without a driver's license. Hell, you can probably race NASCAR without a driver's license.
