Yes, yes, and yes.First, for the students, their abilities, their preparation, and their life circumstances, your community college (I assume Miami Dade College) is harder. People don’t drop out of college because they are lazy, they drop out because they aren’t prepared or qualified. Sometimes that has to do with work ethic and ability to focus, but that’s not an inherent trait; it’s learned behavior. If you haven’t had the opportunity to learn and/or the demand that you learn, you don’t have discipline.Second, your school definitely has more people who will give up. The vast majority of Harvard students have been told, “you’re great, you can do it” their whole lives. Getting into Harvard is pretty good evidence that they have the right stuff. Still, it’s easier to quit than to do well at Harvard. I regularly see students who quit rather than risk or accept failure (which is a natural part of progress and life). As Mark L. Levinson notes in a comment, Harvard has enormous resources for students who struggle; Miami Dade has resources, too, but fewer. As Christie Brown notes in a comment, Harvard has the financial resources to cover all educational costs for students who might qualify for no aid at Miami Dade, removing an enormous source of stress and challenge.Third, I am happy to talk s*** about Harvard and other self-styled elite colleges and universities, but they are highly selective. They admit bright people. There is no doubt that there are students at Miami Dade (one of the biggest and best community college systems) who could succeed at Harvard, but on average, the students at Harvard have more intellectual bandwidth than the students at Miami Dade.Be proud of who you are and what you do. When (not if!) you graduate, you will know you have gone through a rigorous academic program. You will have withstood the temptation to leave. Your accomplishment is no less important because it happened to be a community college and a two-year degree (unless you are in one of the bachelor’s degree programs).
