It needs more tire material for a given diameter than the regular torus-shaped tire, and the support mechanism is of much smaller radius than a typical metal rim. That greatly increases the stress on the material when torque is transferred from the axle during braking or as a driving wheel.

Question: “Before there were widespread gas stations, how did the owners of early motors vehicles get their fuel?”In the early years of motoring, before dedicated gasoline stations existed, motorists could buy gasoline, which the time was considered to be a waste product generated by the production of the far more salable kerosene, from hardware stores, general stores, and even pharmacies. These businesses had pre-existing relationships with the refineries through their sale of kerosene which was used as a lighting fuel.In those years gasoline was not the only motoring fuel. Naphtha and benzene were also used for internal combustion engines.The fuel was stored in in large exposed above ground tanks located along the street. The fuel was measured by transferring it into gallon cans. These were then poured into the automobile’s gas tank using a funnel and a piece of chamois as a filter. Alternatively the seller might fuel the car from five gallon cans of gasoline or naphtha or benzene stacked at curbside.The storage of large quantities of flammable fuel in urban areas by these businesses caused a fire hazard. And after a series of fires and explosions public safety regulations forced businesses selling gasoline to move away from the urban core onto locations on roadways outside of the cities. Thus, the hardware and general stores and pharmacies were prohibited from selling gasoline and the dedicated gasoline station was born.The invention of the measuring gasoline pump which could transfer the gasoline from the tank directly to the vehicle obviated the need to transfer the fuel gallon by gallon.To assure the customer that he was getting the volume of fuel for which he was being charged, the fuel was first pumped up into a measured glass container, where the customer could see the fuel, and then released from the cylinder into the car.The early pumps were not electrically powered. The lever on the left side of the pump shown above was used by the attendant to pump the gas from the storage tank up into the measuring reservoir before it was released into the automobile.
