Sick, tired and in need of medical help I walk into my primary urgent care facility to see a doctor.‘I am sorry, we are unable to see you today unless you take care of your previous medical bills, specifically $150’ the nurse explained‘But I have student insurance, I dont understand how I have any medical bills’ I expressed‘Well, your insurance returned our claims and asked to collect the payment from you and they would reimburse you’ Nurse confirmed‘Well I am not carrying any money, I am a student and this is not a good time for me, would you please let me see a doctor and we can take care of this issue later?’ I asked, but got turned away.Too sick to argue, I started crying and left the facility and got into my car thinking of the cruelty of the situation and my insurance company. Feeling so helpless, I started to make my way back to my dorms. ‘I dont want to call my parents over seas, I dont want them to worry’ I remember thinking.Phone rings. ‘Hi, this is your urgent care nurse, we are sorry for what happened, we would like for you to come back to our facility -someone took care of your bill.’‘What do you mean someone? Who took care of my bill? Are you serious!’ I asked‘The person who paid it asked us not to disclose, you can come back and see a doctor’ nurse said.Till this day, I think of this situation everytime I feel down or hopeless, there are some really good people on this earth. I always send gratitude to that stranger and wish that someone somewhere has returend the favor for me.Update: Thank you so much for the upvotes, this story is dear to my heart. It is the only thing that always reminds me of our humanity and kindness to each other. I am not poor, and I would have been able to pay my medical bill at some point and I am sure enough that someone else needed to be treated more than I did. But at that point, the stranger did not care about any of those details, they did not follow me outside to check my car or who my family was or care if I could pay my bill later - they just did what they thought was right and kind at that time without any intention for acknowledgement or pay back. That is a true act of kindness, and I will never forget the lesson. Always pay it forward…

That on December 11th. I did one of the most humbling and unforgettable things that will ever occur in my life. It started as a nice night, had a nice dinner and was going to play some cribbage online and hit the sack. I think I won the first game against someone who was easily forgettable. The next game made a permanent marker on my very soul. I always like chatting with the people I play. His name was Paul. The computer dealt the cards and I told him my name. The first line of his response floored me. “Please bill don't stop playing with me”. I found this intriguing. Why don't you want me to stop? Paul went on to describe his situation. “Bill, I am dying. I have cancer and it is killing me”. How much longer I asked. His answer almost made me sick. “Bill I won't make it past tonight”. At that moment I realized here was a guy, probably with no family or at least an uncaring family. And he wanted to play his favorite game until the end. We played game after game. Sometimes he would go really slow but he played. On my computer I could turn audio on and I asked him if he could too. He said he would try, and it worked. Now I am talking to a man that is going to die. His words are very quiet and interspersed with forced breathing. I could hear beeping and muffled voices in the background. Paul said it would be easier to text and I said that was fine. I turned mine off but by accident he left his on so I could hear everything that was going on. We played game after game. He told me about how lonely it was to die with no family to speak of. I tried to commiserate but this area I had no experience in. We played on. At 4:17 there was a long pause but after 16 minutes he made another play. Another long pause and then the beeping I heard stopped. It was replaced by a sound I now hate. The sound of passing out of your body and leaving a machine hooked up. I heard the mumbling of women I guessed were the nurses. The sounds were shut off then the computer= link was severed. Nine hours we played for and I guess I will never know but I think I helped someone that night.This is an addition. Thank you all for your up votes but honestly guys any one of you would have done the same thing. As it unfolded no one would have been able to stop playing. Paul's voice was nothing more than a whisper for the brief time we both had the audio on. I look at myself and wonder if it changed me or helped me……dont think so. I am still bill but I am very happy that my basic personality was validated and have more strength to be me. Thnk you all
