On certain days of the week I spend my mornings doing the same series of things to a large number of people. I take down their vitals, I go over a short questionnaire they should have filled out in advance, I draw their blood, and I administer a TB test.Everything is ready before I open the door to the patient. The syringe for the TB test is prepped and ready, and the needle and tubes are laid out in order.As a patient, you won’t see me get out any needle or syringe. They are sitting on tray right behind me, next to the chair I put you in. I’ll turn slightly in my chair to grab what I need, and by the time a needle is in your field of vision, it will be unwrapped and ready to go.The sharps box is on the same table, so I turn back around and discard the needles as soon as I am done with them. Once you leave the room I’ll set up for the next patient, and then I do it all over again.Disposing of a used needle is second nature. I don’t think I’d even be physically capable of not throwing it straight into that box, it’s just an automatic action, like breathing. The same goes for maintaining the sterile state of anything I use on a patient.Accidents do happen when we draw blood, but we don’t forget to use new needles on each patient. I’ve stabbed myself (that was in an ER setting, though) but I’ve never put a used needle in a patient. Never.

My very good friend does this. She has had lupus which she has had for many years. Who am I to criticize her for what she feels she needs to do to protect her from getting sick , since she is already a little inmuno compromised.In the Operating Room, where I worked , we had special masks to prevent against exposure to TB , when we had a patient who came to the OR with active TB. I tested positive on my TB test that I was required to do every year. I took INH for a year after that, and I will always test positive now, and just fill out a questionnaire.As far as as a surgical mask , I'm not sure if helps. May be, maybe not, but why not err on the side of safety ?We also wear, or did wear , paper disposable booties . This has has not been established as to whether this is useful , by AORN standards .It probably isn't ..AORN is the Association of OR nurses , who also determine the standards of sterilization for instruments that are used in surgical precedures .Back to the original question. Yes, they endure the most invasive process you can possibly imagine. If people had to undergo the same process to have biological children, half wouldn’t be born. In addition they come and inspect your home, not just a simple walk through. Each fire alarm, the home alarm system, veterinary records on your pets, and every closet was opened. Your fingerprints were taken and processed locally and through the FBI database. You had a very thorough medical examination and many countries will not accept you even with simple high blood pressure or being overweight. Had to laugh they wanted a TB test, syphilis, and AIDS test every 6 mos, till the adoption was completed. Then there was 2 questionnaires of 12–15 pages each of the most private questions about your personal relationship with your spouse. Then there’s the in person set of interviews, I think it was three meetings for our first adoption. Then they want your whole IRS forms which we refused and simply gave the first page. It was much easier on subsequent adoptions with just the home inspection, medical records of the children you had, FBI fingerprint background check, DFS check, and your medical evaluations. You also had to proven IRS income to meet standards the U.S. has set.
