PDF Editor FAQ
My daughter didn't pick up one of her socks in the bathroom. So I've taken away her iPad and laptop for the day. Am I being too harsh?
No, it’s not harsh, just ineffective.Children figure out quickly that their parents’ corrective measures have very little bite to them. They learn to simply wait out the punishment until Mom or Dad get distracted again by whatever concerns them next and the socks will continue to get dropped on the floor. The technique that worked best in my house was learned the last time I got a parking ticket.I’m assuming if your child has a laptop and iPad, she’s is also getting an allowance of some sort. In kid-world, money “rules” they same way as in the adult World. ***We don’t like paying for mistakes with cash.***So, one day I designed a “Parking” ticket template for household chores. They included a check box and $$$ penalty for each infraction. These tickets could be issued to “anyone” in the house including Mom and Dad!When a chore wasn’t done, anyone could write a ticket, check the appropriate box and stick it on the fridge door. Payment had to be made by the accused the next day, no exceptions. The dramatic yelling and confiscation of “toys” came to an end immediately. After about 2 weeks of issuing tickets and collecting fines, the chores began getting done without my intervention. Relief at last!Give it a try. It might work for you as well. Good luck!Addendum :An issue that came up during my experiment was dealing with legitimate reasons for not doing chores. The solution was to have a trial, like in the courts. The accused still had to pay the fine, but only had a return if the reason was in fact legitimate. Mom and dad could also claim sovereign immunity, but only sparingly. The kids could not claim immunity. Only valid reasons would work .
What is your experience with employee peer-to-peer recognition in a company?
Hello! In my company we have the "Appreciation&Recognition" program that has it`s own budget. It works like this -Appreciation ticket can be written from any employee to any other employee without any limitations regarding hierarchy, grade, position etc. Only one rule - it has to be work-related, even if it`s the smallest things. For example - your colleague stayed for an hour longer in the office to help you finish up a task that would have taken you a few hours. You then take the Appreciation ticket template, fill it in with your name, nominee and the reason for writing the ticket. You then hand the original to him personally and the copy is handed in to the HR department. I`ve received a couple dozen of these tickets during my 3 years of employment here and I must say - it`s really, really nice to receive such ticket from a colleague :)Recognition ticket can be written only by a manager to an employee of a "lower level" - basically - a subordinate. And these are written for achievements a bit more important than just simple tasks. They can be either projects or tasks that have affected the whole department or were very complicated to solve etc.On a quartely basis there is the award ceremony (whoever wants can participate even if they hadn`t got any ticket) in which all the tickets are rewarded with gift cards (paid from the company budget). The amounts are not high, about 25$ for a Recognition ticket and 10$ for an Appreciation ticket, but the money is just a small bonus, the main joy comes from the fact that you have this physical paper certificate where your colleague thanks you and in the award ceremony, you are being thanked officially and your colleagues are looking at you, smiling and clapping and you feel like a star for a moment, really appreciated and loved among the peers :)Recognition tickets are written quite rarely that`s why they are always paid, 100% of them, while there tend to be a lot more of Appreciation tickets. So, according to the budget available, a limit for paid-out Appreciation tickets is set each year. The limit could be, for example, 50 tickets in a quarter. If 50 are received, all of them are going to be paid. If 60 are received, there is going to be something like a lottery to draw 50 of them that will receive the gift cards. But as I said - it`s just a small bonus. Feeling appreciated is the best feeling ever. All of the employees in our office love this program :)
How do you establish financial security in your 20s?
After three years of work, my friend at work told me he had saved $20,000. He told me it happens automatically into his savings from his paycheck. I looked at my statements and there were hundreds of dollars unaccounted for last month, no doubt spent on “women, wine and song”. I started doing what he was doing.
